Episode Summary
A day of small debts. Konata has already pre-ordered the limited edition of the book Kagami lent her, Kagami wants her games back and Konata cannot remember who borrowed hers, and neither of them wins anything in the autumn lottery. They notice that gestures keep going on the phone even though nobody can see them, that the will to tidy up dies the moment the call ends, and that once you make eye contact with a vendor you cannot walk away empty-handed. Then the evening turns quiet: Konata asks her father about the mother she barely remembers, and Sojiro — testing a new camera he claims is for work — says the one thing he was always certain of, while Kanata watches from where she has never quite left.
pass away / keep ~ alive / feel bad about ~ing

10 expressions |
01
have one's hands full with ~
- I bet Mom had her hands full with you.
- She has her hands full with the twins.
(I have my ~ / She has her ~)。
02
get where ~ is coming from
- I totally get where you're coming from.
- I get where she's coming from, but I still disagree.
(I get where you're coming from, but …)。
- Kanata was really young when she passed away.
- Her grandfather passed away last spring.
- As long as the two of you keep me alive inside your hearts, we'll always be together.
- The festival keeps the old songs alive.
keep + 目的語 + 形容詞の形で、alive は名詞の前には置けません(× an alive tradition → a living tradition)。
- But the second you get off the phone, you lose your motivation to keep cleaning.
- I lost my motivation halfway through the course.
don't feel like ~ing
- Nuh-uh, it's a universal truth.
- Treating people well is a universal truth in business.
07
make eye contact with ~
- I made eye contact with the vendor.
- Try to make eye contact with the audience.
- If you pick up a book and the seller's standing right in front of you, you feel bad about going to another table without buying it.
- I feel bad about leaving so early.
about のうしろは動詞ing(× feel bad about to go)。
- They're turning a lot of light novels into anime lately, aren't they?
- They turned the old bank into a café.
受け身の be turned into … (It's being turned into a film.)。
- I hope she doesn't grow up to be like either of us.
- He grew up to be a doctor.

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
It's been so long since + 主語 + 動詞(〜してから久しい)
It's been so long since I was here.
I haven't been here for years が「行っていない」のに対し、It's been so long since ~ は「間があいた」——時間のほうを主語にするのが違い。since のうしろは過去形(× since I am here)。 (It's been three years since ~)。It has been の短縮なので、現在完了です。
- It's been so long since we talked.(話すのは久しぶりだね)
- It's been two months since he left.(彼が去って二か月になる)
PATTERN 2
Wouldn't it be ~ if + 主語 + 過去形?(〜だったらいいと思わない?)
But wouldn't it be really awesome if they released all those books as dating sims?
It would be nice if ~ が独り言に近いのに対し、Wouldn't it be ~ if ~?
- Wouldn't it be easier if we met halfway?(中間で会うほうが楽じゃない?)
- Wouldn't it be great if it snowed?(雪が降ったら最高じゃない?)
PATTERN 3
I was sure that no one else could ever love Kanata as much as I did.
I loved her the most が順位を言うのに対し、no one else could ever ~ は「他には無理だ」——比べる相手を消してしまうのが違い。 as much as + 主語 + did で比較の相手を出せます。
- No one else could ever replace him.(彼の代わりは誰にもつとまらない)
- No one else could ever have finished it in time.(他の誰にも間に合わせられなかっただろう)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
make eye contact with ~
- Try to make eye contact with the audience.
- I made eye contact with the driver before crossing.
- He avoided eye contact the whole meeting.
反対側はavoid eye contact(目を合わせない)。 (Make eye contact, don't avoid it.)。
