Episode Summary
Kagami borrows Konata's computer for committee paperwork and gets a tour of an inbox buried in spam with unusually funny subject lines. Konata and Yutaka both come down with colds, and the visit to Minami's bedside turns into a small argument about whether being frail is an advantage. Miyuki chews xylitol gum for her teeth and loses a filling for her trouble; Hiyori refuses, at length, to let anyone read her doujinshi; Patricia's favourite Japanese bands turn out to be entirely anime themes; and a maid, Konata insists, is nothing at all like a housekeeper. It closes at the game shop, where buying a book for its cover is defended as a once in a lifetime opportunity.

10 expressions |
- Whenever somebody says, Sure, I'll take care of it, chances are they're not going to take care of nothing.
- Chances are the shop's already closed.
(Chances are he forgot.)。The chances are ~ と the を付けてもよく、Chances are good that ~ ならさらに念を押した形になります。
02
It's all in one's head.
- You know how when you're sick, people say it's all in your head?
- The pain isn't real — it's all in your head.
You're imagining it. It's all in your head.
- Chewing gum containing xylitol has been proven to destroy the germs that cause cavities.
- The method has been proven to work.
- Ball's in your court now.
- I've made my offer — the ball's in your court.
It's up to you. Ball's in your court.
05
get a feeling of deja vu
- I got a feeling of deja vu while reading them.
- I get a feeling of deja vu every time I walk in here.
It feels familiar. have / get a sense of deja vu
- Did you just hang up on me?
- She hung up on me halfway through.
07
take ~ under one's wing
- You could say I've taken her under my wing.
- The senior editor took her under his wing.
08
attract a broader audience
- In order to attract a broader audience, the creators of these Mecha series are tossing in a lot more cute boy and girl characters.
- They rewrote the ads to attract a broader audience.
get more viewers が数を増やすのに対し、attract a broader audience は層を広げる——今まで来なかった人を狙うのが違い。
- So when you buy a book on a whim and it turns out to be good, you think you totally scored.
- We drove to the coast on a whim.
10
a once in a lifetime opportunity
- Either way, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity.
- For her it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
a good chance がただの好機なのに対し、a once in a lifetime opportunity は「二度と来ない」——逃したら終わりなのが違い。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Isn't it amazing how + 主語 + 動詞?(〜って驚きじゃない?)
Isn't it amazing how these guys always come up with the funniest things to put in the subject line?
It's amazing that ~ が事実を述べるのに対し、Isn't it amazing how ~? how のうしろは普通の文の語順(× how do these guys come up)。
- Isn't it amazing how fast kids grow?(子どもの育つ速さって驚きだよね)
- Isn't it funny how we always meet here?(いつもここで会うのって不思議だね)
PATTERN 2
Once you've +
Once you've been inside a specialty store, like gamers, ordinary bookstores don't seem like they got you covered.
- Once you've tried it, you'll never go back.(一度試したらもう戻れない)
- Once you've learned to ride, you don't forget.(一度乗れるようになれば忘れない)
PATTERN 3
no matter how hard + 主語 + 動詞(どんなに〜しても)
I couldn't fight this feeling no matter how hard I tried.
how のうしろに形容詞・副詞を置けます(no matter how late / no matter how much)。
- No matter how hard I try, I can't roll my r's.(どんなにやっても巻き舌ができない)
- No matter how late you are, call me.(どんなに遅くなっても電話して)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
chances are ~
- Chances are the shop's already closed.
- Chances are he forgot to send it.
- Chances are good that it'll rain tonight.
(Chances are he forgot.)。The chances are ~ と the を付けても同じで、Chances are good that ~ ならもう一段強い言い方になります。 紛らわしいのがby any chance。 (Are you Kagami, by any chance?)、見込みを言うのか、遠慮がちに尋ねるのかで分けると混ざりません。
