🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
01
one way of looking at it
- No, I guess that's one way of looking at it.
- That's one way of looking at it, I suppose.
You're right. That's one way of ~ が定型で、looking at it の it は「その件」。
02
dive head first into ~
- You all should be thinking about the future while you're diving head first into your studies.
- She dove head first into the new job.
- Now's not the time to be spacing out.
- Sorry, I spaced out for a second.
- Just hanging out with Konata and Miyuki and lost track of time.
- We lost track of time and missed the last train.
05
go to all that trouble
- So what's the point in going to all that trouble?
- You didn't have to go to all that trouble.
make an effort が努力なのに対し、go to all that trouble は「そこまでやる必要が?」——割に合わなさが含みです。 You shouldn't have gone to all that trouble.(そこまでしていただかなくても)。go to the trouble of ~ing
06
make it through unscathed
- He made it through unscathed.
- The report made it through unscathed.
07
the spitting image of ~
- It's the spitting image of you, isn't it?
- She's the spitting image of her mother.
- Pigtails are over. The next big thing is going to be twin drills.
- Everyone says it's the next big thing.
- How dare you introduce yourself before introducing me?
- How dare you say that to her?
Why did you ~? うしろは動詞の原形(× How dare you introduced)。How dare you!
- When you go to the dentist to get some work done, you find yourself returning there again and again.
- I need to get some work done on the car.
have some work done

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
find oneself + 動詞ing(気づくと〜している)
As of late, I've found myself completely obsessed with Morty.
(I find myself / she finds herself)。
- I found myself agreeing with him.(気づいたら賛成していました)
- You'll find yourself using it every day.(毎日使うようになりますよ)
PATTERN 2
This is the first time I've ever +
This is the first time I've ever seen anyone greet someone else with a How do you do?
How do you do?
時制の組み合わせが要点——This is と現在形で受けて、うしろは現在完了(× This was the first time I saw)。 That was the first time I'd ever ~ と全体を一段ずらすのが決まりです。
- This is the first time I've ever flown.(飛行機に乗るのは初めてです)
- That was the first time I'd ever seen snow.(雪を見たのはあれが初めてでした)
PATTERN 3
How come it's so hard for you to return a simple text message?
Why? Why is it hard? と倒置するのに対し、How come のうしろは平叙文の語順——How come it is hard? のまま(× How come is it hard)。 How does it come that ~?
- How come you didn't tell me?(どうして言ってくれなかったの)
- How come it's always me?(どうしていつも私なの)

- That's one way of looking at it, I suppose.
- Well, that's one way of looking at it.
- It's one way of looking at it, but not the only one.
You're right. That's one way of looking at it. That's one way of ~ が定型で、looking at it の it は「その件」——差し替えずにこのまま覚えてしまえます。
