🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
- It was such a nice gesture, and I'd hate to pour cold water on it.
- Don't pour cold water on her idea just yet.
- You don't get an extension on summer vacation, but you get one on the homework.
- Can I get an extension on the deadline?
on のうしろに対象を置きます(an extension on the paper)。
- Lately all the games have been going over, so I guess maybe I caught the bug, too.
- He went once and caught the bug.
the travel bug / the acting bug
04
have some time to kill
- I noticed that it was still early and I had some time to kill.
- I had some time to kill before the train.
- We can't really decide on anything to do unless somebody steps up and says they want to do something.
- Someone needs to step up and lead this.
step up to the plate(野球の打席に立つ)から来た言い方。
- Since Dad's put me in charge of cooking the dinner tonight, I got to go grocery shopping.
- I'll go grocery shopping on the way home.
go + 動詞ing の形(go fishing / go swimming)。
- I left it out overnight and it spoiled.
- Don't leave the milk out overnight.
- Um, and could you please keep this a secret?
- Let's keep this a secret for now.
Don't tell anyone. keep it between us もよく使われます。
- You're still as clumsy as ever.
- The place is as busy as ever.
- We always take turns making the lunches.
- We take turns driving on long trips.
turns は必ず複数で、うしろは動詞ing(× take turns to make のほうが珍しい)。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
It's a good thing (that) 主語 + 動詞, or …(〜でよかった、でなければ…)
It's a good thing we have the same teacher, or you'd be stuck.
It's a good thing ~, or … or のうしろは would が定番(or you'd be stuck)——実際には起きなかったことだからです。
- It's a good thing I checked, or we'd have missed it.(確認しておいてよかった、でなければ見落としていました)
- It's a good thing it stopped raining.(雨がやんでくれて助かりました)
PATTERN 2
Some days ~, and other days ~(〜
Some days you bring proper lunches, and other days you bring simple lunches.
other days の前に and は省けるし、on some days と on を付けても構いません。
- Some days it's packed, and other days it's empty.(混んでいる日もあれば、がらがらの日もあります)
- Some people love it, and others don't.(好きな人もいれば、そうでない人もいます)
PATTERN 3
the type of person who + 動詞(〜するタイプの人)
You're the type of person who makes pots and pans explode whenever you cook.
who の動詞は person に合わせる(the type of person who makes / × who make)——type ではなく person が本体だからです。the type who ~ と person を落とすのも自然。
- He's the type of person who never complains.(彼は文句を言わないタイプです)
- I'm not the type who plans ahead.(前もって計画するタイプではありません)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
pour cold water on ~
- Don't pour cold water on her idea just yet.
- He poured cold water on the whole plan.
- I hate to pour cold water on this, but we're out of budget.
I don't want to pour cold water on this, but ~(水を差すようで悪いのですが)という形が定番です。
