01
the fruits of one's labor
意味努力の成果
- You're gonna get out there and show him all the fruits of your labor.
- Here it is — the fruits of my labor.
💡 労働が実らせた果実——苦労して得たものという比喩です。a result が単なる結果なのに対し、the fruits of one's labor は「積み上げた末の実り」——時間がかかっているのが前提。fruits は複数で、労働の labor は不可算。enjoy the fruits of one's labor(成果を味わう)が定番です。
意味へとへとになる
- You always wear yourself out in the second trimester because of the arts and athletic festivals.
- Don't wear yourself out before the main event.
💡 すり減らす——体力を使い果たすという形です。be tired が状態なのに対し、wear oneself out は「自分でそこまでやってしまう」——やりすぎた結果なのが違い。oneself は主語に合わせる(wear yourself out)。worn out は形容詞で「くたくたの」——物なら「すり切れた」。
意味〜に申し込む
- What event are you going to sign up for?
- I signed up for the morning class.
💡 名前を書いて参加を申し出る——という形です。join が参加することなのに対し、sign up for ~ は「先に申し込む」——手続きの段階を指します。for のうしろは対象(a class / a race / a newsletter)。sign up と sign in は別物——sign in は「入るときに記帳する」です。
04
Don't sweat the small stuff.
意味細かいことは気にするな
- Relax. Don't sweat the small stuff.
- It'll be fine — don't sweat the small stuff.
💡 sweat は汗をかく——気に病んで汗をかくなという形です。Don't worry. が心配全般なのに対し、Don't sweat the small stuff. は「小さいことは」——大事なことは気にしていいという含み。the small stuff は不可算のまま固定。No sweat. なら「お安いご用」——同じ語でまったく別の返事です。
意味善戦する
- They're putting up a good fight.
- We lost, but we put up a good fight.
💡 いい戦いぶりを見せる——負けても healthy な評価です。win が勝利なのに対し、put up a good fight は「食い下がった」——結果は負けでも構わないのが要点。put up ~(見せる・示す)の用法で、put up resistance なら「抵抗する」。スポーツでも交渉でも使えます。
意味筋を違える
- Every time I play a note, it feels like I'm going to pull a muscle.
- I pulled a muscle carrying the boxes.
💡 筋肉を引っぱって痛める——軽い肉離れのことです。get injured が怪我全般なのに対し、pull a muscle は「筋を伸ばして傷める」——日常的で軽いのがふつう。a muscle は単数で、strain a muscle もほぼ同じ。準備運動をせずに動いたときの定番表現です。
意味列に並ぶ
- Standing in line always makes me tired.
- We stood in line for two hours.
💡 列の中に立つ——順番を待つ形です。wait が待つことなのに対し、stand in line は「並んで待つ」——列があるのが前提。アメリカは in line、イギリスは in a queue(動詞なら queue up)。line up は「並ぶ動作」で、stand in line は並んでいる状態です。
意味〜が無性に食べたい
- I was craving some miso ramen today with lots of corn and seaweed.
- I'm craving something sweet.
💡 体が欲しがる——理屈ではない欲求です。want が普通の希望なのに対し、crave ~ は「たまらなく欲しい」——抑えがきかないのが違い。他動詞なので前置詞は不要(× crave for ~ は古い形)。a craving は名詞で「無性の欲求」——食べ物の話でいちばんよく使われます。
意味デザートは別腹だ
- Only if I have room for dessert.
- I always have room for dessert.
💡 room は空間——おなかの余地のことです。be full が満腹なのに対し、have room for ~ は「まだ入る」——空きがあるという言い方。room は不可算(× a room for dessert では「部屋」になります)。make room for ~ なら「場所をあける」——会議室でも予定表でも使えます。
意味〜を応援する
- Yeah, I just came to cheer my daughter on.
- We'll be there cheering you on.
💡 声を出して励ます——そばで後押しする形です。support が支援全般なのに対し、cheer ~ on は「声援を送る」——その場にいるのがふつう。目的語は間に置く(cheer her on / × cheer on her)。cheer up は「元気づける」——on と up でまったく別です。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
第8話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。
PATTERN 1
Wouldn't it be better if + 主語 + 過去形?(〜したほうがよくない?)
Wouldn't it be better if we found their weak spot and pounded that until they holler?
弱いところを見つけて、そこを叩いたほうがよくない?
提案を、否定疑問と仮定法で差し出す形です。Let's ~ が直接の提案なのに対し、Wouldn't it be better if ~? は「そのほうがよくないですか」——相手に決めさせるのが違い。if 節は過去形(if we found / × if we find)——まだやっていないことだからです。答えるときは Yes / No を内容で決める(日本語の「はい/いいえ」につられない)。
他にも使える例:
- Wouldn't it be better if we asked first?(先に聞いたほうがよくないですか)
- Wouldn't it be easier if we split it?(分けたほうが楽ではないですか)
PATTERN 2
every time + 主語 + 動詞(〜するたびに)
Every time I come here, it's always super packed.
ここに来るたび、いつも大混雑なんだよね。
そのたびに必ず起きる——例外がない形です。when が「〜するとき」なのに対し、every time は「一度もはずれない」——回数の話が入ります。接続詞として使えるのでうしろは文(× every time of I come)。each time / whenever もほぼ同じで、whenever がいちばん硬い言い方です。
他にも使える例:
- Every time I wash it, it shrinks.(洗うたびに縮みます)
- Every time we meet, he's late.(会うたびに彼は遅れてきます)
PATTERN 3
not as + 形容詞 + (as …)(そこまで〜ではない)
Maybe you'll play better if you're not as tense, you know?
そこまで力まなければ、もっとうまく吹けるかもしれませんよ。
比較の as ~ as を否定した形です。not very tense が「あまり緊張していない」なのに対し、not as tense は「今ほどではない」——比べる相手があるのが違い。as … の部分は省ける——文脈から「何と比べて」が分かるときは言いません。not so ~ as は古風な形で、今は not as ~ as が標準です。
他にも使える例:
- It's not as cold as yesterday.(昨日ほど寒くありません)
- Try not to press as hard.(そこまで強く押さないでみてください)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
the fruits of one's labor
「努力の成果」
- Here it is — the fruits of my labor.
- Time to enjoy the fruits of our labor.
- This report is the fruits of six months' labor.
⭐ 体育祭の朝、こなたの父が送り出した一言。労働が実らせた果実——苦労して得たものという比喩です。a result が「出てきた結果」でしかないのに対し、the fruits of one's labor は「積み上げた末の実り」——時間と手間がかかっていることが前提になります。だから、長くかかった仕事を人に見せるときにちょうどよく、Come and see the fruits of my labor.(苦労の成果を見に来てください)のように使えます。fruits と複数にするのが決まりで(単数の fruit だと果物そのもの)、labor は不可算——a labor とは言いません。enjoy / reap the fruits of ~(成果を味わう・収穫する)が定番の動詞。少し古風で大げさな響きがあるので、冗談めかして使うとちょうどいい言い方です。
