Episode Summary
The family's happy news about a second baby is swiftly followed by awkward news about a third, and a family meeting threatens to send the loyal maid away for good. The boy talks his mother round with a very convenient version of events, then hits a wall with his own training, asks his parents to pay for a friend's schooling, and gets something quite different: a crash course in leaving home before he has agreed to go.

💡 conflicted は気持ちが揺れている・板ばさみの。相手の迷いに理解を示す言い方です。

意味赤ん坊がその旅を無事に乗り切れる見込みは、かなり低い。
💡 the odds of ~ は〜の見込み、slim は（可能性が）わずかなです。
Lilia has been faithful to this house for years.
意味リーリャは何年もこの家に忠実に仕えてきた。
💡 faithful to ~ は〜に誠実な・忠実な。現在完了で長年の積み重ねを表します。
It wouldn't be fair for her to get in so much trouble for something she didn't do.
意味していないことで、あの人がそんなに責められるのはおかしいよね。
💡 It wouldn't be fair for A to ~ はAが〜するのは不公平だ。仮定の would でやわらかく説得します。
On the contrary, this is what childrearing should feel like.
意味それどころか、子育てとは本来こういうものです。
💡 on the contrary はそれどころか・反対に。相手の見方を打ち消して言い直す表現です。

意味おまえの剣はもう伸び悩んでいる。
💡 stagnate は停滞する・伸び悩む。成長が止まった状態を指摘する硬い語です。

意味この歳でおまえを遠くにやるのは、親として無責任だ。
💡 It is ~ of A to … は…するとはAは〜だ（人の性質を評価）。判断の理由を筋道立てて述べます。
What a golden opportunity to actually demonstrate some paternal dignity.
意味父親の威厳を見せる、またとない好機ですね。
💡 golden opportunity は絶好の機会、paternal は父親のです。皮肉まじりの後押し。
I'd be willing to bet you could count them on one hand.
意味片手で数えられるくらいしかいないはずだ。
💡 I'd be willing to bet (that) ~ はきっと〜だと思う。count on one hand はごくわずかしかないです。
〈上級〉恩を返す・たしなめる・願い出る——硬い場面でも通る言い回しを10個。Must-Know とは別枠の実用表現です。

第4話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
It would be ~ of us to ~（〜するのは…だろう）It would be irresponsible of us to send you away at your age.
この歳でおまえを遠くにやるのは、親として無責任だ。
It is 形容詞 of 人 to ~ は人の行為を評価する形。would を使うと仮定として判断を示す、落ち着いた説明になります。
他にも使える例：
I'd be willing to bet (that) ~（きっと〜だと思う）I'd be willing to bet that you could count all the active King-Class mages in the world on one hand.
現役の王級魔術師なんて、世界中で片手で数えられるくらいだろう。
「賭けてもいい」という言い方で強い確信を示します。I bet ~ よりていねいで改まった響きです。
他にも使える例：
It's time I ~（もう〜する時だ）It's time I return the favor.
今度はぼくが恩を返す番だ。
It's time (that) + 主語 + 動詞 で「そろそろ〜すべきだ」。動詞は過去形（returned）が正式で、会話では現在形もよく聞かれます。

That's a tall order.
それは無理な注文だ。
a tall order はとても難しい要求・無理な注文。できないとは言わずに、難しさを伝えるときにぴったりです。That's asking a lot.（それはかなりの頼みだ）も近い言い方。この回では、赤ん坊を連れた長旅の難しさを見積もる独白で使われています。

〈上級版〉第4話は、説得する・見積もる・願い出る回。It would be irresponsible of us to send you away at your age. / I'm starting to worry that I won't improve much more on my own. / That's a tall order. のような表現から、unaccompanied / stamina / conflicted / faithful のような語彙まで扱いました。It would be ~ of us to ~ で判断の理由を示す言い方は、断りや説明の場のひな型としてそのまま使えます。
