🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈中級〉第10話の難破船ゾーンの三人、個性の説明合戦、怖がる峰田をなだめる場面、そして反撃から、そのまま使える言い方を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

freak out

意味パニックになる

  • Mineta, don't freak out!
  • Don't freak out — it's just a drill.

💡 感情が振り切れる——取り乱す形です。panic がやや硬いのに対し、freak out は口語そのもの——怒り・驚き・喜びのどれでも振り切れるのが違い。freak ~ out と他動詞にすると「〜をぎょっとさせる」That freaked me out. が定番です。

02

save one's life

意味命を救う

  • You saved my life, Asui.
  • That helmet saved his life.

💡 命を助ける——そのままの意味です。help が手を貸すのに対し、save one's life は「死ぬところだった」——危機が前提なのが違い。所有格は救われた側(saved my life)。大げさな感謝としても使われ、You're a lifesaver. が軽い版です。

03

turn out to be ~

意味結局〜ということになる

  • This is turning out to be a terrible day of class.
  • It turned out to be a false alarm.

💡 回って表に出る——ふたを開けたらという形です。become が変化なのに対し、turn out to be ~ は「分かってみれば」——予想とのずれを含むのが違い。It turns out (that) ~節でつなぐ形も同じ意味。会話でとてもよく使う言い方です。

04

be up to ~

意味〜次第だ

  • This is up to us.
  • It's up to you where we eat.

💡 その人のところまで来ている——判断を委ねる形です。You decide. が直接なのに対し、be up to ~ は「任せる」——責任ごと渡すのが違い。It's up to you. が最頻出。be up to something(何か企んでいる)はまったく別の意味なので注意。

05

have no idea ~

意味〜がまったく分からない

  • It means the villains probably have no idea what our Quirks are.
  • I have no idea where he went.

💡 考えの手がかりがない——見当もつかない形です。don't know が事実なのに対し、have no idea ~ は「まるで分からない」——強調が入るのが違い。うしろは疑問詞の節が定番(have no idea what / where / why)。I have no idea. 単独でも通じます。

06

cling to ~

意味〜にしがみつく

  • I can jump high and cling to pretty much any wall.
  • The child clung to her arm.

07

depending on ~

意味〜によって変わる

  • Their strength varies depending on how I'm feeling.
  • The price changes depending on the season.

💡 それ次第で——条件で結果が動く形です。because of ~ が原因なのに対し、depending on ~ は「場合による」——結果が一つに決まらないのが違い。on のうしろは名詞か疑問詞の節It depends. だけで「時と場合による」という返事になります。

08

go first

意味先に行く

  • So let's talk Quirks. I'll go first.
  • You go first — I'll follow.

💡 順番の先頭に立つ——口火を切る形です。start が始めるのに対し、go first は「順番のなかで最初」——後に続く人がいるのが前提なのが違い。You go first.「お先にどうぞ」自己紹介・発表・列で毎日使えます。

09

get through to ~

意味〜と連絡がつく

  • Can't get through to Thirteen or Aizawa.
  • I couldn't get through to the office all morning.

💡 通り抜けて届く——回線がつながる形です。call が電話をかける行為なのに対し、get through to ~ は「つながった」——結果を言うのが違い。話が通じるという意味もあり(I can't get through to him)、そちらは「分からせられない」という嘆きです。

10

figure out how to ~

意味〜のやり方を見つけ出す

  • We just have to figure out how to use it!
  • I figured out how to fix it.

💡 頭を使って形にする——方法にたどり着く形です。learn が教わって覚えるのに対し、figure out は「自力で解く」——試行錯誤があるのが違い。how / what / why と組めます。I'll figure it out.「なんとかするよ」という頼もしい一言。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第10話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

as fast as + 主語 + 動詞(〜と同じ速さで)

They grow back as fast as I can pull them off.

二つの速さを並べて「同じだけ速い」と言う形です。very fast が程度を言うのに対し、as fast as ~ は比べる相手が要る——基準が文中にあるのが違い。as ~ as のあいだは形容詞か副詞の原級比較級は入りません(× as faster as)。as fast as I can なら「できるだけ速く」。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

It's impossible not to + 動詞の原形(〜せずにはいられない)

It's impossible not to be scared right now!

二重否定で「どうしてもそうなる」と言う形です。I'm scared がそのままなのに対し、It's impossible not to ~ は「誰でもそうなる」——自分だけではないと言えるのが違い。not は to の直前に置きます(× It's not impossible to be scared——これは逆の意味)。can't help ~ing も近い言い方です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

Who knows if ~?(〜かどうか、誰にも分からない)

Who knows if he'll make it out in one piece?

形は疑問文でも、中身は「分からない」という断言です。I don't know if ~ が自分の話なのに対し、Who knows if ~? は「誰にも分からない」——投げ出す響きがあるのが違い。if のうしろは平叙文の語順Who knows? 単独なら「さあね」という相づちになります。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

freak out

⭐ 沈む船の上でわめく峰田に、緑谷が投げた一言。感情が振り切れる——抑えがきかなくなって取り乱すという形です。panic が「パニックになる」とやや硬いのに対し、freak out は口語そのもの——怒り・驚き・喜びのどれでも振り切れるところまで含むのが違います。だから、いい方にも振れてShe freaked out when she got the offer.(採用の連絡に大喜びした)のようにも言えます。freak ~ out と他動詞にすれば「〜をぎょっとさせる」で、That freaked me out.(あれにはぞっとした)が定番。形容詞の freaked out(動転している)まで、ひとそろい覚えておくと便利です。
