🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

be out of one's element

  • Don't you think you're a little out of your element here, Eraser Head?
  • I'm out of my element at these parties.

be bad at ~ が能力なのに対し、be out of one's element は「場が合わない」——力を出せない環境を言うのが違い。反対は in one's element(水を得た魚)。

02

be woefully unprepared

  • You were woefully unprepared.
  • We were woefully unprepared for the cold.

03

can't possibly ~

  • But that can't possibly be their master plan.
  • He can't possibly have finished already.

possibly は can't の直後。肯定文の Could you possibly ~?

04

From what I can tell

  • From what I can tell, there are only four or five truly dangerous people here.
  • From what I can tell, nothing was taken.

From what I can tell as far as I can tell

05

be known for ~

  • You're known for surprise attacks, not fighting head-to-head.
  • The town is known for its bridges.

06

skilled at ~

  • You're a rescue hero, Thirteen, skilled at saving people from disasters.
  • She's skilled at reading a room.

07

turn ~ into …

  • How unfortunate. You've turned yourself into dust.
  • They turned the barn into a café.

08

pry ~ open

  • Will I be able to pry it open in time?
  • He pried the lid open with a knife.

09

go over one's limit

  • When he goes over his wattage limit, his brain short circuits.
  • Don't go over your data limit.

use too much が量なのに対し、go over one's limit は「決められた線」——基準があるのが違い。go over budget / time も同じ形。

10

one's tell

  • I've found your tell. It's your hair.
  • Everyone has a tell when they're bluffing.

have a tell / find one's tell

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

despite + 動詞ing(〜しているのに)

But despite knowing that, you didn't hesitate to jump into the middle of this fight.

in spite of ~ と同じ意味で、despite of は誤りです。

PATTERN 2

When faced with ~(過去分詞で始まる副詞節)

When faced with true, devastating power, you might as well be a Quirkless child.

When you are faced with ~ の「主語+be動詞」を落とした形です。

PATTERN 3

not all ~(部分否定)

And not all of them have the offensive skills we do.

all / every / both / always はnot と組むと必ず部分否定になります。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

be out of one's element

I'm completely out of my element with spreadsheets.(表計算はまるで畑違いで)のように言えます。反対は in one's element——She's in her element when she's teaching.(教えているときの彼女は水を得た魚だ)。

この 上級版 では、be out of one's element / be woefully unprepared / can't possibly ~ / From what I can tell / one's tell のような相手を読む言い回しを中心に据えました。

despite + 動詞ing / When faced with ~ / not all ~ まで扱う、上級者向けの第11話です。
