01

see ~ coming

  • How did we not see this coming?
  • Nobody saw that result coming.

I didn't see that coming.

02

look out for ~

  • I'm glad to see that he's looking out for his friend.
  • Thanks for looking out for me.

Look out!

03

sneak ~ out

  • We should sneak you out of here and get you both to the nurse's office.
  • They sneaked the cake out of the kitchen.

目的語は間に置く(sneak you out)。sneak in / sneak away

04

wipe ~ out

  • All those underlings wiped out.
  • One storm wiped out the harvest.

05

head to ~

  • He said for all of us to head to the entrance!
  • I'm heading to the station now.

I'm heading out.

06

come over

  • If he comes over here, he's gonna learn my secret.
  • Come over after work.

  • Leave the injured to us.
  • Leave the booking to me.

Leave it to me. leave ~ alone(放っておく)とは別物です。

08

mess with ~

  • Yeah, they messed with the wrong kids, huh?
  • Don't mess with the settings.

Don't mess with me.

09

except for ~

  • Everyone seems to be unharmed except for that boy.
  • The office is empty except for me.

10

regroup with ~

  • We should regroup with the other guys.
  • Let's regroup with the team at noon.

Let's regroup.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

There doesn't seem to be ~(〜はなさそうだ)

Fortunately there doesn't seem to be any serious brain damage.

There doesn't seem to be ~ は「見たかぎりでは」——断言を避けるのが違い。否定は seem 側に付けるのが自然で(× There seems not to be)、数えられる名詞なら any + 複数形を続けます。

PATTERN 2

That could have been really bad.

PATTERN 3

be glad (that) + 主語 + 動詞(〜でよかった)

Well, I'm just glad you didn't get hurt.

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

see ~ coming

I didn't see that coming.——「それは予想外だった」という、驚きを認める一言です。目的語は see と coming のあいだに置きます(see it coming / saw the change coming)。
