🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈上級〉第15話の宣戦布告・開会の実況・オールマイトの助言から、比喩を含む手応えのある表現を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

have ~ in one's corner

意味〜が味方についている

  • However, you've got All Might in your corner, helping you out.
  • It helps to have a good lawyer in your corner.

💡 ボクシングで自分の陣地の角(corner)に控えているセコンドの図。help より「後ろ盾がいる」という心強さが出ます。have / get ~ in one's corner の形が定番で、人だけでなく組織や制度にも使えます。

02

be no stranger to ~

意味〜には慣れている/〜は初めてではない

  • This first group are no strangers to the spotlight!
  • She's no stranger to long flights.

💡 「〜にとって見知らぬ人ではない」という遠回しな言い方で、be used to ~ より格調が出るのが使いどころ。紹介文・プロフィール・実況と相性がよく、苦労や困難を指して no stranger to hardship のようにも言います。

03

chock full of ~

意味〜がぎっしり詰まった

  • They haven't been getting nearly as much screentime, but this next group is still chock full of talent!
  • The schedule is chock full of meetings.

💡 chock は物が動かないようにかませる楔(くさび)。full of ~ を「これ以上入らない」ところまで強めた言い方です。chock-full とハイフンでつなぐ書き方も同じくらい見ます。

04

without further ado

意味前置きはこのくらいで/さっそくですが

  • Without further ado, it's time for us to get started!
  • Without further ado, let's welcome our first speaker.

💡 ado は「騒ぎ・手間」という古い語で、いまはほぼこの形でしか使いません。司会・発表・動画の冒頭で「本題に入ります」と合図する決まり文句。覚えるなら丸ごと——分解して応用する語ではありません。

05

stand a chance against ~

意味〜に太刀打ちできる

  • Those robots were built to be a real challenge, but they didn't stand a chance against his chart-topping moves!
  • A small shop doesn't stand a chance against that kind of pricing.

💡 ふつう否定で使うのがこの表現の癖で、don't stand a chance=勝ち目がない。against のあとに「相手」を置きます。肯定で使うときは might stand a chance のように可能性を弱める語と一緒になることが多いです。

06

be gunning for ~

意味〜を狙い撃ちにする/〜を倒しにかかる

  • All of these dumb students will be gunning for us in the festival now!
  • Three teams are gunning for the top spot.

💡 銃口を向けるという物騒な語源ですが、いまは「本気で狙っている」という比喩としてスポーツ・仕事で普通に使います。be gunning for 人=その人を倒す気でいる、be gunning for 地位=その座を本気で取りにいく。

07

a stepping stone to ~

意味〜への踏み台

  • Not my fault the rest of you are just stepping stones to my victory.
  • The internship was a stepping stone to a full-time role.

💡 川を渡るために置かれた飛び石。自分のキャリアについて言えば前向き、他人について言えば見下した響きになる——同じ語でどちらにも転ぶので、主語に注意して使う語です。

08

project ~ onto …

意味〜を…に重ねて見る

  • I understand how you feel. And I may even be projecting a bit of myself onto you.
  • Parents often project their own dreams onto their children.

💡 映写機で像を投げかけるのが project。自分の感情や過去を、別の誰かの上に映しているという心理の語で、project A onto B の前置詞は onto が基本です。会話でも自省の場面でそのまま出てきます。

09

talk ~ up

意味〜を持ち上げる/大きく宣伝する

  • Present Mic sure did talk us up a lot.
  • He talked up the new model all week.

💡 話して価値を上げるという形の句動詞。誉めるが、やや盛っているという含みが残るのが面白いところで、talk ~ down(けなす・値切る)と対になります。目的語が代名詞なら talk us up のように必ず間に挟みます。

10

steal ~ right from under someone

意味〜を横からさらう

  • Maybe some of my peers are, but I'm here to let you know that, if you don't bring your very best, I'll steal your spot right from under you.
  • A rival firm stole the contract right from under us.

💡 「その人の真下から」持ち去る=目の前にあったのに取られる、という図。right が「まさに・堂々と」を足していて、これがないと悔しさが出ません。from under one's nose と言い換えても同じ意味になります。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第15話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Whoever + 動詞 …(〜する人は誰でも)

Whoever makes it through the initial games face off in the finals.

whoever は「誰でも」と「主語」を兼ねた一語で、anyone who ~ を1語に畳んだ形です。節をまるごと主語にできるのが利点で、Whoever impresses the audience will have a better chance. のように後ろに述語がもう一つ続きます。whatever(何でも)/whenever(いつでも)/wherever(どこでも)も同じ作り。規約・募集要項・アナウンスで頻出します。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

A, while B(対比の while)

Some heroes always aim for the top, while others happily settle.

while には「〜する間に」のほかに「一方で」という対比の用法があります。見分け方は時間の語があるかどうか——ここは Some ~, while others ~ と二つの型を並べているので対比です。but より対立が穏やかで、どちらが正しいとも言っていません。文頭に置いて While A, B. の形にもできます。報告書や比較の文章でそのまま使えます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

considering ~(〜を考えると)

Some people think they shouldn't be holding the festival, considering what happened.

considering は前置詞にも接続詞にもなる便利な語で、後ろに名詞(considering the weather)も節(considering what happened)も置けます。「その事情を勘定に入れれば」という前置きなので、評価を和らげたいときに効きます(Not bad, considering the budget.)。文末に置いて …, considering. だけで終える言い方もあります。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

without further ado

⭐ ミッドナイトが第一種目を切り出す一言。会議・発表・司会・動画の頭で、そのまま本題へ渡す合図になります。ado は「手間・ひと騒ぎ」という古い語で、いまはほぼこの形の中でしか生き残っていません。だから分解せず丸ごと覚えるのが正解。少しくだけた場なら Alright, let's jump in. に置き換えられます。
