🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
01
make a name for oneself
- He used his power to make a name for himself as a hero.
- She made a name for herself in documentary film.
make a name for oneself as / in ~ と分野を続けます。
- All three of them put their trust in me. This is my responsibility.
- The team put their trust in a new supplier.
put one's faith in ~ もほぼ同義。
- It would go against the values of the festival to advance without earning my spot.
- She earned her spot on the starting lineup.
04
one's conscience won't let one ~
- I know this is a great opportunity, but my conscience won't let me.
- My conscience won't let me sign that.
a guilty conscience(やましさ)、in good conscience(良心に照らして)も同じ語の仲間。
- Everyone gave their all in round two.
- They gave their all and still came up short.
give it one's all と it を挟む形も同じくらい使われます。
- A hero with a tragic backstory, fighting to rise above it.
- She rose above the criticism and kept going.
- I'm afraid it's the end of the road for you.
- After three rejections, it was the end of the road for the project.
the end of the line
- Here's another weird turn of events.
- In a strange turn of events, the rival firm offered to help.
an unexpected / a strange / a sudden turn of events
- It would go against the values of the festival to advance without earning my spot.
- That goes against everything we agreed on.
go against the grain(世の流れに逆らう)という定型も有名。be against ~(反対している)は立場、go against ~ は行為——ここが違いです。
10
show what one is made of
- Finally getting the chance to show what we're made of.
- This project is your chance to show what you're made of.
be made of sterner stuff(もっと芯が強い)も同じ発想。show 人 what one is made of と相手を挟めます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Regardless of how strong I am, this isn't how I wanted to get here.
regardless of what / who / where も同じ形で回せます。
- Regardless of how busy you are, eat something.(どれだけ忙しくても何か食べて)
- Regardless of what he says, we proceed.(彼が何と言おうと進める)
PATTERN 2
owe it to 人 to + 動詞の原形(形式目的語の it)
I owe it to everyone who's supported me to try my best.
owe 人 to do とは言えない——この it が必ず要ります。 You owe it to yourself to ~(自分のためにも〜すべきだ)は励ましの定型としてそのまま使えます。owe 人 an apology(謝るべきだ)も同じ owe の仲間。
- You owe it to yourself to rest.(自分のためにも休むべきだ)
- We owe it to them to explain.(彼らには説明する義務がある)
PATTERN 3
How strange that we could be aiming for the same thing despite such different childhoods.
How strange! 会話では It's strange that ~ のほうが普通で、How ~ that は語りや独白の響きになります。
- How odd that no one noticed.(誰も気づかなかったとは妙だ)
- How lucky that you called.(電話をくれて、なんと運のいいことか)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use expression
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
make a name for oneself
- She made a name for herself in design.
- He's making a name for himself as a translator.
- This is your chance to make a name for yourself.
I'm trying to make a name for myself in ~.

この 上級版 では、make a name for oneself / earn one's spot / rise above ~ / show what one is made of を中心に据えました。
