Episode Summary
Shinso's Quirk takes hold of anyone who answers him, and Izuku, frozen, starts marching himself out of the ring. A strange vision of past figures lets him flick his fingers hard enough to break the spell, and he wins with a throw, while the pros in the stands wonder how a talent like Shinso ended up in general studies. Endeavor corners his son in a corridor to demand he use his fire, and Todoroki answers by burying Sero, and half the stadium, in ice.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
- Turning the tables at the last moment — a classic Midoriya maneuver!
- One question turned the tables in the debate.
- It's not just that he's learning from his experiences — he uses what he's picked up to improve his odds.
- A second draft improves your odds a lot.
the odds are against us(分が悪い)、against all odds(あらゆる不利を覆して)も同じ odds。
03
slip through the cracks
- Well, there are a ton of applicants each year. Guess sometimes people slip through the cracks.
- A few invoices slipped through the cracks last month.
fall through the cracks
- I heard some of the things he said to you. — Yeah. But I still couldn't go easy on him.
- Go easy on the new guy.
go easy on 人(手加減する・叱りすぎない)のほか、go easy on ものだと「控えめにする」(Go easy on the salt./塩は控えめに)。
05
keep one's eye on the prize
- I have to keep my eye on the prize. Aiming for the top.
- Long project — keep your eye on the prize.
- Don't you think you went overboard?
- I went overboard with the decorations.
- But at the expense of some really creepy-looking elbows. — That was uncalled for.
- That comment was uncalled for.
- An early frontrunner who's way too strong for his own good!
- He's too honest for his own good.
💡 too ~ for one's own good の形で使うのが基本。 for your own good
- Sixteen players will clash in a battle of wits, Quirks, and pride!
- The negotiation turned into a battle of wits.
keep one's wits about one(冷静さを保つ)、at one's wits' end(万策尽きる)も同じ wits。
- He's pulled that shoulder throw on you before, huh?
- Don't pull that trick on me again.
pull a fast one on

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Thanks to the way my Quirk works, I've always been at a big disadvantage.
the way のあとに節をそのまま続ける形で、how の代わりに使えるのが便利なところです(the way it works = how it works)。 I like the way you think.(その考え方、好きだな)のように人を評するのにも使えます。in the way that ~ と前置詞を足すと、さらに硬い書き言葉になります。
- I love the way she explains things.(彼女の説明の仕方が好きだ)
- That's not the way it works.(そういう仕組みではない)
PATTERN 2
Not every ~(部分否定:すべてが〜というわけではない)
Not every question does it, though.
not always / not necessarily / not all
- Not every rule applies here.(すべての規則が当てはまるわけではない)
- Not all of them agreed.(全員が賛成したわけではない)
PATTERN 3
Whatever +
Whatever you saw, it won't be interfering with you or your progress in the future.
- Whatever they decide, we'll adapt.(どう決まろうと対応する)
- Whatever happens, call me.(何があっても連絡して)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use expression
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
turn the tables
- One good question turned the tables.
- They turned the tables in the second half.
- We can still turn the tables on them.
相手を指すときは on を使う(turn the tables on ~)。

この 上級版 では、turn the tables / improve one's odds / slip through the cracks / keep one's eye on the prize を中心に据えました。
