🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
- The 16 finalists have the option of participating in those activities or sitting out to prepare for battle.
- I'll sit out this round.
sit out a dance / a game / a song と目的語も取れ、sit in(参加する・代役で入る)とちょうど対になります。
- I guess I really have only been getting by because of luck and my friends helping me out.
- My French is enough to get by.
get by with / on ~(〜でしのぐ)の形が便利で、get by on very little sleep のように使います。
- Or tried to hype themselves up.
- I hype myself up with music before a presentation.
get hyped(テンションが上がる)、be hyped up about ~(〜に大興奮している)も同じ語から。
- And others still who just focused on trying to calm their nerves.
- A short walk calms my nerves.
have nerves of steel(肝が据わっている)、get on someone's nerves(癇にさわる)も同じ nerves。
- But they switch it up every time.
- Let's switch it up and meet in the morning.
switch A for B(AをBに替える)とは別の形なので、混同しないようにしてください。
- There were those who prepped for the fight.
- I'm prepping for the interview tonight.
名詞の prep(下準備)もよく使い、meal prep(作り置き)はそのまま定着しています。
- We'll have to move up two students from the fifth-place cavalry team.
- They moved the meeting up to ten.
- They're actually taking these dumb side games seriously?
- Nobody took the warning seriously.
💡 seriously の位置が要点で、目的語が短ければ take it seriously、長ければ take seriously + 目的語と動きます。take oneself too seriously(自分を重く見すぎる)は人柄を評するときの定番表現です。
- Let's cut to the good stuff and not delay these finals any longer.
- Let's cut to the point.
- For throwing away his chance like that.
- Don't throw away a good offer.
throw it all away(何もかも台無しにする)という形も頻出です。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
I saw you and figured I'd say hi.
- I figured I'd ask before buying.(買う前に聞いておこうと思って)
- I figured you'd be busy.(忙しいだろうと思ってた)
PATTERN 2
the option of + 動詞ing(〜するという選択肢)
The 16 finalists have the option of participating in those activities or sitting out.
option のあとは of + 動詞ingが基本形です(the option to + 動詞の原形も使えますが、of -ing のほうが硬く正確)。have the option of ~ing で「〜する選択肢がある」、Aか B かを or でつなげるのがこの文の作り。 You have the option of ~ と書けば、命令ではなく選ばせている姿勢が伝わります。
- You have the option of paying monthly.(月払いという選択肢もあります)
- We had the option of waiting.(待つという手もあった)
PATTERN 3
Some ~, others …(〜
Some tried to come up with a strategy. Some tried to rest their bodies. And others still who just focused on calming their nerves.
Some ~, others ~, and still others ~ と三段に伸ばせます。 (Some days are quiet, others aren't.)。
- Some like it hot, others don't.(熱いのが好きな人もいれば、そうでない人も)
- Some arrived early; the others were late.(早く来た人もいて、残りは遅刻した)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use expression
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
First things first.
- First things first — let's fix the bug.
- First things first, did everyone eat?
- First things first: who's taking notes?
