Episode Summary

Shinso's Quirk takes hold of anyone who answers him, and Izuku, frozen, starts marching himself out of the ring. A strange vision of past figures lets him flick his fingers hard enough to break the spell, and he wins with a throw, while the pros in the stands wonder how a talent like Shinso ended up in general studies. Endeavor corners his son in a corridor to demand he use his fire, and Todoroki answers by burying Sero, and half the stadium, in ice.

これは 中級レベル版。第20話は、試合前の尾白からの助言、保健室でのオールマイトとの会話、そして試合開始直前の心操の挑発が英語の見どころです。fight back / start off strong / warn ~ about … といった実際に作中で使われている表現に、jealousy / applicant / concentrate / victor / tense のような語彙を合わせました。もう一方のレベルは〈上級〉版でどうぞ。

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈中級〉第20話に出てくる、会話でそのまま口から出る句動詞を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

bump into ~

意味〜にぶつかる/ばったり会う

  • I bumped into another person, and it was like I woke up.
  • I bumped into an old classmate at the station.

💡 物理的にぶつかると偶然出くわすの両方に使える句動詞。run into ~ とほぼ同義で、bump のほうが接触の感じが残ります。bump into a problem(問題にぶつかる)という比喩もよく使います。

02

work out

意味うまくいく

  • Even if it didn't work out this time, I'm not giving up.
  • Don't worry, it'll work out.

💡 ほぐれて、収まるところに収まるというのが基本の感覚。主語はふつう「もの・こと」で、人ではありません。work out(運動する)、work out ~(計算して出す)という別の意味もあるので、文脈で三つを切り分けるのが腕の見せどころ。

03

put pressure on ~

意味〜に重圧をかける

  • Have you been putting too much pressure on him again?
  • Don't put pressure on yourself.

💡 圧力を「その上に置く」という形。人にも状況にも使えて、on のあとが受け手です。be under pressure(重圧を受けている)が受け身側の言い方。put pressure on oneself(自分を追い込む)も頻出です。

04

fight back

意味反撃する/こらえる

  • You're not supposed to be able to fight back! What did you do?
  • She fought back tears.

💡 押し返すのが基本で、fight back tears / a smile と続けると「こらえる」に変わります。fight back against ~ と相手を続ける形も可能。やられっぱなしではないという気概が出る句動詞です。

05

pick up ~

意味〜を身につける

  • He uses what he's picked up to improve his odds.
  • I picked up a bit of Spanish while I was there.

💡 拾い上げるから「習わずに覚える」へ。learn が意識的な学習なのに対し、pick up は自然に身につくのが違いです。言語・癖・技と相性がよく、pick up on ~ になると「〜に気づく」と別の意味になります。

06

start off strong

意味出だしから飛ばす

  • A brilliant, surprise opening from the underdog! Way to start off strong, Sero!
  • The quarter started off strong.

💡 start off は「動き出す」で、そこに strong を添えた形。出だしだけを評価しているので、裏には「最後まで続くかどうかは別」という含みが残ることもあります。finish strong(終わりまで力を落とさない)と対で覚えると便利。

07

get rid of ~

意味〜を取り除く

  • That vision wasn't what got rid of the brainwashing effects.
  • We got rid of the old printer.

💡 rid は「取り除く」という単独では使いにくい動詞で、ほぼこの形でしか出てきません。物・習慣・症状・不安のどれにでも使える万能表現で、過去形・過去分詞は got rid / gotten rid。

08

go on about ~

意味〜についてくどくど言う

  • That monkey was going on about his pride earlier.
  • He went on about the weather for ten minutes.

💡 話が先へ進み続ける——聞き手がうんざりしている含みが入ります。talk about ~ が中立なのに対し、go on about ~ は明確に批判的。go on(続ける)だけなら中立なので、about が付くと色がつくと覚えてください。

09

stand around

意味突っ立っている

  • Enough standing around. Now welcome to the ring, our next players.
  • Don't just stand around — help out.

💡 around が「目的もなくその辺に」を足しています。何もせずにいることへの苛立ちが出るので、指示や叱責の前置きとしてよく使われます。sit around / hang around も同じ作りの仲間です。

10

warn ~ about …

意味〜に…について注意しておく

  • I fell for it, even after Ojiro warned me about his power.
  • They warned us about the traffic.

💡 warn 人 about もの が基本形で、warn 人 that + 節、warn 人 to + 動詞の原形も取れます。about のあとは「危険の中身」。warn 人 of ~ は同義でより硬く、報道や掲示で見かけます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第20話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

be used to + 動詞ing(〜に慣れている)

I'm used to people looking at me like I'm the bad guy.

to のあとは動詞の原形ではなく -ing——ここが最大の落とし穴です(× I'm used to look)。この to は不定詞ではなく前置詞だから、と理屈で覚えると忘れません。used to + 動詞の原形(昔は〜したものだ)とはまったく別物で、be / get が前に付くかどうかが見分け方。「〜が…するのに慣れている」と動作主を挟めるのもこの形の便利なところで、ここでは people looking がそれにあたります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

the one who + 動詞(〜したのは…だ)

I'm the one who used One For All. But I'm not the one who moved my fingers just now.

the one を立てて、後ろの関係詞節で説明する形。「ほかの誰でもなく、この人が」と絞り込む働きがあり、強調構文 It is ~ who … の軽い版として使えます。否定にすると「自分ではない」と責任の所在をはっきり外せるのが、この文で効いているところ。the ones who ~ と複数にもでき、You're the one who ~ は非難にも称賛にも転びます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

Thanks to ~(〜のおかげで/〜のせいで)

Thanks to the way my Quirk works, I've always been at a big disadvantage.

感謝の thanks とは限らないのがこの表現の面白いところ。皮肉として「〜のせいで」にもなり、ここでもまさに悪い結果につながっています——訳し分けは文脈しだい。後ろは名詞か動名詞で、節は置けません(× Thanks to he helped)。because of ~ より主観が入るぶん、原因をはっきり名指ししたいときに向きます。No thanks to ~ だと「〜のおかげではまったくない」と皮肉が確定します。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

I've been there.

⭐ 緑谷が心操の嫉妬を受け止める一言。「そこに居たことがある」=同じ目に遭ったことがある、という形です。I understand. より近く、I know how you feel. より軽い——助言をせずに、ただ隣に立つときの言い方。相手が失敗や苦労を話したあとに置けば、それだけで十分な相づちになります。Been there.

この 中級版 では、bump into ~ / work out / pick up ~ / get rid of ~ を中心に据えました。
