🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
If you hadn't run into that fight, I would've been a worthless bystander watching from the crowd.
If you didn't ~, I would ~ が現在の仮定なのに対し、hadn't + 過去分詞/would've + 過去分詞は過去の仮定——もう結果が出ているのが違い。
- If I hadn't left early, I would've missed it.(早く出ていなければ見逃していた)
- If she hadn't asked, we would've never known.(彼女が聞かなければ、ずっと知らないままだった)
PATTERN 2
Must've dropped him in the air.
I dropped him. 否定は can't have + 過去分詞(× mustn't have は「してはいけない」)。
- He must've forgotten.(彼は忘れたにちがいない)
- They must've left already.(もう出たのだろう)
PATTERN 3
before + 主語 + had a chance to + 動詞の原形(〜する間もなく)
Their bodies moved before they had a chance to think.
without thinking が「考えずに」なのに対し、before ~ had a chance to …
- He hung up before I had a chance to explain.(説明する間もなく切られた)
- It sold out before we had a chance to order.(注文する間もなく売り切れた)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
keep ~ under wraps
- They kept the merger under wraps for months.
- Let's keep this under wraps until Friday.
- The design was kept under wraps.
We're keeping the launch date under wraps for now.(発売日は今のところ伏せています)のように使えます。 keep / stay / remain と組み合わせられ、be kept under wraps と受け身にもできます。

この 上級版 では、keep ~ under wraps / wear ~ out / what it takes to ~ / the true test of ~ / risk one's life のような打ち明けて評する言い回しを中心に据えました。
If S hadn't ~, S would've ~(あのとき〜していなかったら)、must've + 過去分詞(〜したにちがいない)、before S had a chance to ~(〜する間もなく)——悔やむ・推し量る・語る型が並んでいます。
If S hadn't ~, S would've ~ / must've + 過去分詞 / before S had a chance to ~ まで扱う、上級者向けの第2話です。
