Episode Summary

Uraraka needs one touch to beat Bakugo, and he refuses to give her one, blasting her back until the pros in the crowd start booing and Aizawa suggests they hang up their capes: the boy is taking her seriously because she has earned it. Her real plan is the rubble from his own blasts, drifting overhead, but he breaks up the shower with one shot and she is out. On the phone her father tells her there is no need to rush, and the second round opens with Izuku against Todoroki.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

get the upper hand

  • That's why it's obvious what Uraraka needs to do to get the upper hand.
  • They got the upper hand in the negotiation.

gain / have the upper hand

02

get the drop on ~

  • Look at that reaction time! You can't get the drop on him.
  • A competitor got the drop on us with that launch.

get the jump on ~ も同じ意味。

03

come out on top

  • He's making sure he does whatever it takes to keep her at bay and come out on top.
  • After three rounds of cuts, she came out on top.

💡 もみ合いのあと、上に出ているのが come out on top。 come out ahead(差し引きで得をする)は金銭寄りの言い換えです。

04

be pitted against ~

  • Todoroki and I are finally being pitted against each other one-on-one.
  • The two teams were pitted against each other in the semifinal.

pit A against B

05

by a landslide

  • It's the guy who won his last fight by a landslide.
  • The measure passed by a landslide.

win / lose by a landslide の形が基本で、a landslide victory と形容詞的にも置けます。

06

have one's back

  • Instead, she's cheering me on. She's got my back.
  • Whatever you decide, I've got your back.

I've got your back. go behind someone's back(陰でこそこそする)はちょうど逆。

07

get carried away

  • Guess I got a little carried away at the end thinking I had it in the bag.
  • I got carried away and bought three.

Don't get carried away.

08

all along

  • Hey, she had a plan all along!
  • He knew all along and said nothing.

all along ⇔ all of a sudden

09

hang up one's cape

  • If you're being serious, you can go home and hang up your cape.
  • After thirty years, he hung up his cape.

10

be oblivious to ~

  • She kept him focused on her by attacking relentlessly, rendering him oblivious.
  • He was oblivious to the tension in the room.

目的語なしで blissfully oblivious(幸せそうに何も知らない)とも使います。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

The very fact that ~ shows …(〜ということ自体が…

The very fact that you feel that way shows me that you'll make a kind, caring hero one day.

the very same / at that very moment も同じ very の使い方です。

PATTERN 2

prove to be ~(〜だと分かる/〜であることが判明する)

These two could prove to be formidable obstacles to you one day.

turn out to be ~ とほぼ同義で、prove のほうが硬い。to be は省略できる(It proved difficult.)

PATTERN 3

It's no time to + 動詞の原形(いまは〜しているときではない)

If I were you, I'd be frustrated, too. It's no time to wallow.

It's not the time to ~ より強く、切り替えを促します。This is no time to ~ と this で受ける形も同じくらい使われます。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

have one's back

I've got your back. の形で丸ごと覚えるのが早く、会話では I got your back. 逆に go behind someone's back は「陰でこそこそする」——同じ back でも正反対です。

この 上級版 では、get the upper hand / get the drop on ~ / all along / have one's back を中心に据えました。
