Episode Summary

Izuku and Todoroki's match turns into a war of attrition, with Izuku spending his fingers one at a time to blow away the ice while Bakugo points out from the stands that Quirks tire like muscles and Todoroki is visibly shivering. Izuku goads him to fight at full strength, memories of his mother come flooding back, and Todoroki finally lights his left side. The collision fills the stadium with steam, and when it clears Izuku is out of bounds.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈中級〉第23話に出てくる、会話でそのまま口から出る句動詞を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

run out of breath

意味息が切れる

  • If you sprint too much, you run out of breath.
  • I ran out of breath on the last flight of stairs.

💡 run out of ~ は「〜を使い切る」で、of のあとが尽きるもの。run out of time / money / ideas と入れ替えて使えます。out of breath だけでも「息が上がっている」。

02

be worn out

意味くたくただ/すり減っている

  • Are you really that worn out from defending yourself?
  • These shoes are worn out.

💡 wear(すり減らす)の過去分詞で、人にも物にも使えるのが便利なところ。人なら「疲れ果てた」、物なら「使い古した」。worn-out とハイフンで形容詞にもできます。

03

be beat up

意味ぼろぼろだ

  • He's way more beat up at this point.
  • The car looks beat up but it runs.

💡 殴られて痛んだ状態から、「使い込まれてくたびれた」まで幅があります。くだけた語なので、書き言葉では battered を選びます。beat oneself up は「自分を責める」——形が似ていて意味は別です。

04

cool ~ down

意味〜を冷やす/落ち着かせる

  • The air around the ring had been thoroughly cooled down.
  • Let the engine cool down first.

💡 温度にも感情にも使えるのがこの句動詞。Cool down. だけなら「落ち着け」。cool off もほぼ同じで、運動後のクールダウンもこの語です。

05

pause between ~

意味〜の合間に一拍置く

  • Plus, you don't have to pause between attacks.
  • He pauses between sentences when he's thinking.

💡 pause は「止める」ではなく「一拍置く」——また動き出す前提があるのが stop との違いです。between のあとは複数形。名詞の a pause(間)もそのまま使えます。

06

overuse ~

意味〜を使いすぎる

  • If you overuse your muscles, you risk tearing them apart.
  • Don't overuse that word.

💡 over- が「度を越して」を足す接頭辞。oversleep / overthink / overeat と同じ作りで、動詞の前に付けるだけで「〜しすぎる」が作れます。名詞も同形の overuse(使いすぎ)。

07

end up with ~

意味結局〜を抱えることになる

  • At this rate, he might end up with permanent damage.
  • We ended up with three spare keys.

💡 行き着いた結果、手元に残ったものを言う形。望んだ結果とは限らないのがこの表現の色で、end up + 形容詞・場所と続ける形もあります(end up alone / end up in Kyoto)。

08

find an opening

意味隙を見つける

  • So, during this fight, I need to focus on finding an opening somewhere.
  • I couldn't find an opening to say it.

💡 opening は「開いているところ」——守りの隙にも、会話に入る間合いにも使えます。求人の「空き」も同じ語(There's an opening in sales.)。

09

keep from ~ing

意味〜しないようにする

  • He plans to keep from being blown out of bounds.
  • I held on to the rail to keep from slipping.

💡 keep from ~ing は「〜せずにいる」。やらないように自分で押さえているニュアンスが出ます。keep A from ~ing なら「Aが〜しないようにする」と、止める相手を立てる形に変わります。I kept him from saying too much. のように使えます。

10

go through ~

意味〜を経験する/くぐり抜ける

  • There's no way I can know what you've gone through.
  • She went through a lot last year.

💡 中を通り抜けるから「経験する」へ。つらい経験に使うことが多いので、What you're going through は相手をねぎらう定型になります。go through ~ には「ざっと目を通す」という意味もあります。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第23話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

risk + 動詞ing(〜する危険を冒す)

If you overuse your muscles, you risk tearing them apart.

risk のあとは to不定詞ではなく -ing——ここが最大の注意点です(× risk to tear)。「そうなるかもしれないと分かっていて、それでもやる」という含みが入るので、忠告にも、覚悟の表明にも使えます。同じく -ing を取る動詞にavoid / mind / enjoy / finish / consider があり、まとめて覚えると効率がいい一群です。名詞の risk なら run the risk of ~ing。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Why don't we + 動詞の原形?(〜しませんか)

You can't fight anymore, can you? Why don't we end this?

形は否定疑問でも、意味は提案です。「なぜしないの?」と理由を聞いているわけではない——ここが山。Let's ~ より押しつけが弱く、相手に断る余地を残します。Why don't you ~? にすると相手だけへの助言になり、Why not ~? と縮めればさらに軽くなります。Shall we ~? はやや古風なので、日常では Why don't we ~? のほうが自然です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

Only 主語 can + 動詞の原形(〜できるのは…だけだ)

Only you can decide to become a hero, no one else.

Only + 主語を文頭に置いて、「ほかの誰でもない」と絞り込む形です。この語順なら倒置は起きません(主語そのものを only が修飾しているため)。Only when / Only after など副詞句が頭に来ると倒置が起きる(Only then did I realize ~)——何を only が受けているかで挙動が変わるのがこの語のややこしさです。no one else を後ろに足すと、念押しになります。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

I've got this.

⭐ 最後の一撃へ向かう緑谷が、自分に言い聞かせる一言。自分に向ければ「やれる」、相手に向ければ「こっちは大丈夫」——同じ形で二通りに働くのが便利なところです。会話では 've が落ちて I got this. になります。手伝おうとしてくれた人を、角を立てずに断るのにも使えて、Thanks, but I've got this.

この 中級版 では、run out of breath / be worn out / find an opening / end up with ~ を中心に据えました。
