Iida sweeps past Shiozaki but is frozen by Todoroki in the semifinal, and Bakugo wears down first Kirishima and then Tokoyami. Then Iida's mother phones with news that a villain has attacked his brother.

これは 中級レベル版。第24話は、リカバリーガールのお説教、インゲニウムの留守番電話、そして観客席での飯田との会話が英語の見どころです。leave a message / push ~ too hard / pay off といった実際に作中で使われている表現に、weakness / noisy / successor / competitor / essence のような語彙を合わせました。もう一方のレベルは〈上級〉版でどうぞ。

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈中級〉第24話に出てくる、会話でそのまま口から出る句動詞を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

keep ~ up

意味〜を保ちつづける

  • But how long can he keep his Hardening up?
  • Keep it up — you're almost there.

💡 上がっている状態を、下ろさずにおくのが keep ~ up。Keep it up! だけで「その調子で」という励ましになります。keep up with ~ になると「〜に遅れずについていく」と意味が変わるので、with があるかないかで区別してください。

02

pay off

意味報われる/実を結ぶ

  • This is where everyone's efforts are finally gonna pay off.
  • All that practice paid off.

💡 元は「借りを払い終える」。払い込んできたものが、最後に返ってくるという感覚です。主語は努力・練習・我慢など「注ぎ込んだもの」になります。pay ~ off と目的語を挟めば「〜を完済する」の意味になります。

03

heal ~ up

意味〜を治す/治りきる

  • Recovery Girl healed me up enough to walk.
  • Give it a week to heal up.

💡 up が「最後まで」を足すので、heal より「ちゃんと治りきる」感じが出ます。自分が治るときは目的語なしで heal up(It'll heal up soon.)、誰かを治すときは heal ~ up と使い分けます。

04

get out there

意味外に出る/表に出ていく

  • Get out there — you don't wanna miss the end.
  • Stop reading about it and get out there.

💡 there は特定の場所ではなく「世の中・現場」を指します。部屋から出ろ、ではなく「動き出せ」という背中の押し方。get out there and ~ の形で使うことが多く、Get out there and try. のようにひとまとまりで覚えると便利です。

05

go straight for ~

意味まっすぐ〜を狙う

  • Kirishima! Go straight for his chin!
  • She went straight for the hardest question.

💡 for が「〜に向かって」、straight が「寄り道なしで」。迷わず本命に行くという形です。go straight to ~ は「まっすぐその場所へ行く」で目的地、go straight for ~ は狙い——前置詞ひとつで変わります。

06

run out of ~

意味〜を切らす/〜がなくなる

  • I'm running out of darkness!
  • We ran out of time before the last question.

💡 手持ちが尽きて、外に出てしまうという図。主語は「使う側の人」です(I ran out of money.)。なくなる物のほうを主語にするなら run out(The milk ran out.)と of が落ちます。

07

watch ~ closely

意味〜をよく見る/注視する

  • I watched your fight with him closely.
  • Watch her hands closely and you'll see the trick.

💡 closely は「距離が近い」ではなく「細かく」。見落とさないように、という注意の度合いを足す副詞です。look closely at ~ / listen closely も同じ使い方で、carefully と置き換えられる場面がほとんどです。

08

leave a message

意味伝言を残す

  • Please leave a message.
  • He wasn't in, so I left a message.

💡 留守番電話でも受付でも、これ一択の定型です。leave a message for ~(〜宛に)/leave a message with ~(〜に預けて)と前置詞で相手を足せます。take a message は逆に「伝言を受ける」側——Can I take a message? は電話を受けたときの定番です。

09

get stuck in ~

意味〜に引っかかる/はまり込む

  • I need to remove them or they'll get stuck in your joints.
  • The car got stuck in the mud.

💡 stick(くっつく)の過去分詞 stuckで、動けなくなった状態を表します。物理的に挟まる場合にも、状況に行き詰まる場合にも使えて、I'm stuck. のひと言は「手が止まった」という相談の合図になります。

10

push ~ too hard

意味〜を追い込みすぎる

  • You lit a fire under this child and pushed him too hard.
  • Don't push yourself too hard this week.

💡 push は「押す」から「せき立てる」へ。too hard が付くと、限度を越えたという批判になります。push oneself too hard と自分に向ければ「無理をしすぎる」。push for ~ なら「〜を強く求める」と、前置詞で意味が変わります。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第24話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

How long can ~ keep …ing?(どれくらい〜し続けられる?)

But how long can he keep his Hardening up?

How long は時間の長さ、keep ...ing は「〜し続ける」——この二つが合わさって「持続の限界を問う」形になります。How long have you been ~ing? なら現在までの継続、How long can ~ は先の見通しと、時制で向きが変わります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

I wish I could have + 過去分詞(〜できたらよかったのに)

I wish I coulda seen them fight!

過ぎたことへの「〜したかった」を言う形。I wish I could ~ が今の願望なら、could have + 過去分詞は過去の心残りです。会話では could have が coulda と縮みます——書くときは could have に戻してください。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

~ enough to + 動詞の原形(〜できるくらい…)

Recovery Girl healed me up enough to walk.

enough は形容詞・副詞の後ろに置くのが鉄則です(good enough、enough good ではない)。to 以下が「どの程度か」の目安を示します。too ~ to …(…するには〜すぎる)と対で覚えると、程度を言う表現が一気に安定します。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

It's for the best.

⭐ 兄と話せなかった飯田が、自分に言い聞かせた一言。直訳は「それが最善のためだ」ですが、実際は「残念だけど、結果的にはこれでいい」という受け止め方の言葉です。望んだ結果ではなかったときにしか使わないのがポイントで、喜ばしい報せに It's for the best. とは言いません。Maybe it's for the best.

この 中級版 では、pay off / keep ~ up / run out of ~ / heal ~ up を中心に据えました。
