🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

egg ~ on

  • Otherwise, why egg him on so much?
  • His friends egged him on until he signed up.

02

light a fire under ~

  • You lit a fire under this child and pushed him too hard.
  • The deadline finally lit a fire under the team.

light a fire under yourself

03

rub salt in ~'s wounds

  • Now you're just rubbing salt in his wounds.
  • Bringing up the score again is rubbing salt in his wounds.

04

be in no state for ~

  • He's in no state for visitors.
  • She's in no state for a long drive tonight.

💡 state は「状態」。

05

see the bigger picture

  • I couldn't see the bigger picture.
  • Step back and see the bigger picture before you decide.

Let's look at the bigger picture.

06

go beyond ~'s expectations

  • You've gone beyond my expectations, time and time again.
  • The result went beyond our expectations.

meet ~'s expectations(期待に応える)/fall short of ~'s expectations(期待を下回る)と三段で覚えると、評価の言葉がひと通りそろいます。

07

strain to ~

  • You've been straining to keep your body rock-hard this whole fight.
  • He was straining to hear what she said.

08

fall apart

  • Sooner or later, you'll fall apart.
  • The plan fell apart at the last minute.

09

be on the ropes

  • But this time, it looks like he's on the ropes!
  • The company has been on the ropes since spring.

10

wear ~ down

  • Is he just trying to wear me down?
  • The long meetings wore everyone down.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Meddling where you don't technically have to is the essence of being a hero.

PATTERN 2

if ~ were to …, ~ would …(仮に〜だとしたら)

If he were to inherit it, the strength added to his own Quirk would make him unbeatable.

主語が he でも were(was ではない)のが仮定法の目印です。 If you were to ask me, …

PATTERN 3

not as ~ as …(…

Back then it wasn't as rare of a thing.

会話では as rare of a thing のように of が挟まることがありますが、書き言葉では as rare a thing が標準です。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

meddling where one doesn't have to

この 上級版 では、see the bigger picture / be on the ropes / wear ~ down / rub salt in ~'s wounds を中心に据えました。
