🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈上級〉第25話の決勝・表彰式・病室のやりとりから、比喩を含む手応えのある表現を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

be true to one's word

意味言ったことを守る/約束どおりにする

  • You're true to your word.
  • She's true to her word — the report was there by nine.

💡 word には「約束・言質」という意味があります。その言葉に対して誠実である、つまり有言実行だということ。keep one's word(約束を守る)が一回の行為なら、be true to one's word は「そういう人だ」という人物評に寄ります。

02

make a fool out of ~

意味〜を笑いものにする/コケにする

  • I'll tell you what'll happen if you make a fool outta me.
  • He felt they had made a fool out of him.

💡 相手を fool(間抜け)に仕立てるというのが元の図。会話では out of が outta に縮みます。make a fool of oneself なら「自分で恥をかく」——out of が抜けた形は自分に向けて使うことが多いので、並べて覚えてください。

03

lose one's spark

意味精彩を欠く/らしさを失う

  • It almost seems like he lost his spark.
  • The band lost its spark after the second album.

💡 spark は火花。その人を光らせていた小さな火が消えたという比喩です。技術が落ちたのではなく、勢い・輝きが感じられないときに選ばれます。反対は have a spark / there's a spark to ~。人にも作品にも店にも使えます。

04

work things out

意味話をつける/なんとか収める

  • I'm sure you'll work things out.
  • Give them a week and they'll work things out.

💡 out が「最後まで」、work が「手を動かして片づける」。もつれたものを、時間をかけてほどくという感じです。人間関係にも問題にも使えて、work it out と代名詞を挟む形が会話ではいちばんよく出ます。

05

settle things with ~

意味〜とけりをつける

  • And I still need to settle things with someone.
  • I want to settle things with him before I leave.

💡 settle は「落ち着かせる・決着させる」。宙ぶらりんだったものを、地面に下ろすイメージです。喧嘩にも借金にも使えますが、settle down(腰を落ち着ける)とは別物なので混同しないように。

06

open ~'s eyes

意味〜の目を開かせる/気づかせる

  • Midoriya opened my eyes during our match.
  • That trip really opened my eyes.

💡 閉じていた目を、他人が開けてやるという図。知識が増えたというより、見え方が変わったときに使います。open ~'s eyes to … と to を足せば「…に気づかせる」と対象を言えます。eye-opening(目からうろこの)は同じ発想の形容詞。

07

doubt oneself

意味自分を疑う/自信をなくす

  • I started to doubt myself.
  • Don't doubt yourself this early.

💡 doubt は「〜ではないと思う」寄りの語で、suspect とは向きが逆です。doubt oneself は「これでいいのか」と自分の判断を疑うこと。self-doubt という名詞もよく使われ、a moment of self-doubt のように言えます。

08

What has become of ~?

意味〜はどうなったのか

  • So what has become of our two top competitors?
  • I wonder what became of that old shop.

💡 become of ~ は「〜の身に起こる」——become の用法のなかでも、これだけは形が独特です。主語は必ず what か whateverで、What has become of ~? / Whatever became of ~? の二つが決まり文句。消息が知れない相手を思い出して言うときに、そのまま使えます。

09

a late bloomer

意味遅咲きの人

  • I'm just a late bloomer.
  • He was a late bloomer, and he's fine now.

💡 bloom は花が咲くこと。咲くのが人より遅かっただけという言い方です。責める語ではなく、むしろ擁護する語——まだこれから伸びるという含みがあります。身長にも才能にもキャリアにも使えます。

10

be in and out

意味意識が行ったり来たりしている

  • He's still in and out.
  • She was in and out for most of the night.

💡 意識が「入ったり出たり」、つまりはっきりしたり、ぼんやりしたり。病室での定番の言い方です。be in and out of ~ なら「〜に出たり入ったり」と場所を言う形になり、in and out of hospital(入退院を繰り返して)のように使います。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第25話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

If ~ had …, I don't know if …(もし…していたら、どうなっていたか)

If the surgery had happened any later, I don't know if he would have made it.

仮定法過去完了——実際には起きなかった過去を語る形です。if 節が had + 過去分詞、主節が would have + 過去分詞。any later の any は「ほんの少しでも」という幅を足す用法で、any sooner / any further も同じ働きをします。I don't know if … と受けることで、断定を避けつつ深刻さが伝わります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Even if ~, I refuse to …(たとえ〜でも、…しない)

Even if the world considers me the winner, I refuse to accept it like this.

even if は「仮に〜だとしても」と、譲歩をいったん認める形。even though(実際にそうなのに)とは別物で、even if は事実かどうかを問わないのが違いです。主節に refuse / won't / still を置くと、意志の強さが出ます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

There's no point if ~(〜なら意味がない)

There's no point if you don't fight me with the same power you used against Deku.

point は「要点・意義」。There's no point in ~ing(〜しても無駄だ)が基本形で、if 節で条件を付けると「その条件では意味がない」と絞り込めます。What's the point of ~?(〜して何になる)も同じ point。I see your point.(言いたいことは分かる)まで含めて一族です。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

trust yourself

⭐ 迷いを口にした轟に、オールマイトが details を聞かずに返した一言。Believe in yourself が「できると信じろ」なのに対し、Trust yourself は「その判断でいい」——能力ではなく、判断を信じろと言っています。相手の事情に踏み込まずに背中を押せるのが強みで、I won't ask for details, but trust yourself. はそのままひな型として使えます。

Editor's Pick

この 上級版 では、be true to one's word / lose one's spark / open ~'s eyes / What has become of ~?
