Episode Summary

After the festival the class are recognised on the street, and Aizawa follows the draft results, in which Izuku receives none, with a lesson in choosing hero names, judged one by one by Midnight. Froppy and Red Riot sail through, Alien Queen and King Explosion Murder do not, and Iida, whose brother has asked him to take the name Ingenium, writes down only his own. Izuku claims the insult he grew up with, and All Might nervously passes on an offer from his old teacher.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

extend an offer to ~

  • By extending offers to first-years like you, pros are investing in your potential.
  • They extended an offer to her the same week.

02

die down

  • Any offers can be rescinded if their interest in you dies down.
  • Wait until the noise dies down.

03

prove oneself

  • We'll still have to prove ourselves after we've gotten recruited.
  • He had one month to prove himself.

04

up close and personal

  • Up close and personal, in the field. Firsthand.
  • You see the details up close and personal.

💡 close(近い)と personal(じかの)を重ねた、決まった並びの言い方です。

05

have final approval over ~

  • Midnight is going to have final approval over your names.
  • Legal has final approval over the wording.

over が「〜に対する権限」を表していて、have the final say on ~ もほぼ同じ意味で使えます。

06

pay homage to ~

  • You're paying homage to the Chivalrous Hero, Crimson Riot, yes?
  • The film pays homage to the silent era.

07

bear the name of ~

  • If you're bearing the name of someone you admire, you have that much more to live up to.
  • The hall bears the name of its founder.

be named after ~(〜にちなんで名づけられる)が事実の説明なら、bear the name of ~ は責任の話になります。

08

riff off of ~

  • There's no way I can choose a name that riffs off of his yet.
  • The design riffs off of a 1970s poster.

09

go so far as to ~

  • If he went so far as to use his old hero name when making the offer…
  • She went so far as to rewrite the whole section.

go as far as ~ が距離や範囲なら、go so far as to + 動詞は「行為の程度」と覚え分けてください。

10

count ~ among …

  • He retired a long time ago, so I forget to count him among the people who know.
  • I count her among my closest friends.

count ~ as …

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

by ~ing(〜することによって)

By extending offers to first-years like you, pros are investing in your potential.

PATTERN 2

go so far as to ~(〜するまでする)

If he went so far as to use his old hero name when making the offer…

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a failure.

PATTERN 3

The stronger I am, the more possibilities I'll have.

The sooner, the better.

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

bear the name of ~

この 上級版 では、extend an offer to ~ / die down / bear the name of ~ / go so far as to ~ を中心に据えました。
