🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions | 各解説つき
〈上級〉第28話の修業の講評・ベストジーニストの講釈・刑事の報告・マニュアルの忠告から、手応えのある表現を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。
01
hold one's own against ~
意味〜を相手に持ちこたえる
- If you can't even hold your own against an old man, how will you protect those in need?
- She held her own against much older players.
💡 one's own(自分の持ち分)を手放さずにいる——つまり押し込まれないということ。勝つ必要はなく、対等に渡り合えていれば使えます。格上を相手にしたときの評価として使うのがふつうで、ほめ言葉になるところが持ち味です。
意味時間を稼ぐ
- If you're trying to buy time, it won't work.
- We sent a short reply to buy time.
💡 時間を「買う」——代価を払って先延ばしにする、という比喩です。本命の手当てが整うまでのつなぎを指します。stall(引き延ばす)はもっと露骨で、buy time のほうが戦術として中立に響きます。
意味肝心なのは〜することだ
- The key is to let you get experience with different types of villains.
- The key is to start before you feel ready.
💡 key は鍵——そこを開ければ先へ進める一点という比喩です。後ろは to 不定詞でも動名詞でもかまいません(The key is starting early.)。The key to ~ is … と前置詞 to を使えば「〜の鍵は…だ」と対象を先に置けます。要点をひとつに絞って示すときに効く形です。
04
give off the aura of ~
意味〜の風格を漂わせる
- You must give off the aura of a hero.
- The place gives off the aura of an old library.
💡 give off は「(におい・熱・気配を)発する」。本人が意図しなくても、にじみ出てしまうものに使います。aura は目に見えない雰囲気。give off a smell / give off heat のように、実体のあるものにも同じ形が使えます。
意味〜を安心させる
- Your presence must calm those in danger and give them peace of mind.
- A written estimate gives clients peace of mind.
💡 peace of mind は「心の平静」——心配事がない状態を指す、ひとまとまりの名詞句です。保険・保証・契約の説明で頻出で、for your peace of mind(ご安心いただくために)という形もよく見ます。
意味〜に対して…する義理がある
- I just felt I owed it to you to let you know.
- We owe it to the team to be honest about this.
💡 owe は「負っている」。金銭ではなく、筋を通す義理を指します。it は後ろの to 不定詞を先取りした仮目的語——この it は訳しません。owe it to oneself to ~ なら「自分のためにも〜すべきだ」。
07
the mastermind behind ~
意味〜の黒幕
- Why do you think this'll lead us to the mastermind behind the League?
- They never identified the mastermind behind the scheme.
💡 mastermind は計画を組み立てた頭脳。behind が「背後にいて表に出ない」ことを示します。動詞としても使えて、He masterminded the whole thing.(一切を仕組んだ)のように言えます。
意味〜を深読みする
- Maybe there's a reason for that, or maybe I'm just reading into things.
- Don't read too much into a short reply.
💡 書かれていないものを、読み手が足してしまうという形。read too much into ~ と too much を挟む形がいちばん多く使われます。自分の推測を差し引いて話すときの前置きとして便利で、断定を避けながら仮説を出せます。
意味〜に出くわす
- You'll be in trouble when you come across someone who's the complete opposite.
- I came across an old photo while cleaning.
💡 探していないのに、ふと行き当たるのが come across ~。人にも物にも情報にも使えます。come across as ~ になると「〜という印象を与える」と意味がまるで変わるので、as があるかないかで見分けてください。
意味けんかを止めに入る
- In Shibuya, we'll have plenty of small fights to break up.
- Two of the staff went over to break up the fight.
💡 break up は「ばらばらにする」。取っ組み合っている二人を引き離すという、そのままの図です。break up には「解散する・別れる」という別の意味もあり、目的語が fight かどうかで判断します。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
第28話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
PATTERN 1
No matter how ~, …(どれほど〜でも、…)
No matter how noble the reason, a pro can't use their Quirk for themselves.
どれほど立派な理由があろうと、プロが個性を私的に使うことは許されない。
no matter how のあとは形容詞か副詞が続き、そのあとに主語と動詞が来ます。however で置き換え可能(However noble the reason, …)で、however のほうが硬い響き。原則を述べて例外を封じる——規則や方針の説明でよく使われる形です。
他にも使える例:
- No matter how busy you are, take lunch.(どんなに忙しくても昼は食べて)
- No matter how small, report it.(どんなに小さくても報告を)
PATTERN 2
It's as though ~(まるで〜であるかのようだ)
It's as though he literally can't think for himself.
まるで、自分でものを考えられないかのようだ。
as though と as if はほぼ同じで、as though のほうが書き言葉寄りです。事実ではないと分かっている場合は過去形を使いますが、「そう見える」と観察を述べるときは現在形のままでかまいません。断定を避けて所見を述べるのに向いた形です。
他にも使える例:
- It's as though nothing happened.(まるで何もなかったかのようだ)
- He talks as though he were in charge.(まるで責任者のような口ぶりだ)
PATTERN 3
Not unless ~(〜でないかぎりは違う)
Not unless it's completely integrated into someone's body.
完全に体に組み込まれているのでなければ、話は別だ。
直前の内容を受けて、条件つきで否定する独特の受け答えです。unless は「〜でないかぎり」で、Not unless ~ は「その条件を満たさなければ、ノーだ」。会話では文の断片として単独で使えます——Can we ship it today? — Not unless it's packed by four.
他にも使える例:
- Not unless you ask first.(先に聞いてからでないと駄目だ)
- Not unless the rain stops.(雨がやまないかぎり無理だ)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use expression
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
owe it to ~ to …
「〜に対して…する義理がある」
- I owed it to you to let you know.
- We owe it to the team to say this plainly.
- You owe it to yourself to take the week off.
⭐ 規則を曲げてまで情報を伝えに来た刑事の一言。owe は借りを負っていること。金銭ではなく、筋を通す義理のほうです。it は後ろの to 不定詞を先取りした仮目的語で、この it は訳しません。本来やらなくてよいことを、それでもやる理由として使えるので、説明の一行目に置くと、相手が身構えずに聞けます。owe it to oneself to ~ と自分に向ければ「自分のためにも〜すべきだ」。

★★★★★
5.0 / 5
第28話「緑谷出久と死柄木弔」は、修業の続きと、動き出す事件の回。三分間の組手で、緑谷は相手の癖を読んで一撃を当てます——フルカウルが技として形になり始めた回です。一方、刑事は規則を曲げてまでオールマイトに検査の結果を伝えに来る。事務所ではプロの個性は自分のためのものではないと説かれ、飯田は兄が襲われた街で職場体験に入っていました。列車が保須に近づいたとき、街の方角で建物が吹き飛びます。
この 上級版 では、owe it to ~ to … / The key is to ~ / read into ~ / give off the aura of ~ を中心に据えました。
