Episode Summary

Pinned in the alley, Iida remembers his brother saying the coolest people are the ones who do things for others, gets up, and has Todoroki freeze his overheated leg so he can run again; together the three of them finally bring the Hero Killer down. But as they drag him out to the pros, a winged Nomu snatches Izuku, and Stain, supposedly beaten, frees him and turns on the arriving heroes with such ferocity that nobody can move until he passes out on his feet.

hold a candle to ~ / take ~ at face value / do things for others

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

hold a candle to ~

  • I'm immature. I can't hold a candle to them.
  • The remake can't hold a candle to the original.

否定文でしか使いません(can't hold a candle to ~)。

02

take ~ at face value

  • You take things at face value a little too much.
  • Don't take the first number at face value.

03

take on multiple ~ at once

  • It must be difficult for him to take on multiple opponents at once.
  • She's taking on multiple projects at once.

04

seem rattled

  • Something clearly changed in him just now. He seems rattled.
  • He seemed rattled after the call.

05

be out of practice

  • I might be more outta practice than I thought.
  • I'm out of practice, so go easy on me.

💡 practice(訓練)から離れているという形。 get back into practice

06

tie ~ up

  • We need to tie this guy up.
  • Let's tie up the last two items and finish.

be tied up なら「手がふさがっている」——I'm tied up until three.

07

land an attack

  • They managed to land two attacks.
  • He landed a punch in the first round.

08

do things for others

  • I think the coolest people in the world are those who do things for others.
  • He's happiest when he's doing things for others.

09

help people in trouble

  • I wanted to be the kind of guy who helps people in trouble.
  • The fund exists to help people in trouble.

people who are in trouble の who are が落ちた形で、英語では前置詞句が名詞の後ろに回るのがふつう。

10

work alongside ~

  • He's a super-popular pro with 65 sidekicks working alongside him.
  • I worked alongside her for three years.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

It must be difficult for ~ to …(〜には…

It must be difficult for him to take on multiple opponents at once.

It must be hard for them to plan this far ahead.

PATTERN 2

Hasn't anyone ever told you ~?(誰にも言われたことがないのか)

Hasn't anyone ever told you you rely on your Quirk too much?

PATTERN 3

those who ~(〜する人たち)

The coolest people in the world are those who do things for others.

those のあとに名詞は置きません(those people who は重複)。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

can't hold a candle to ~

この 上級版 では、can't hold a candle to ~ / take ~ at face value / land an attack / do things for others を中心に据えました。
