🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

maintain the status quo

  • The police force sought to maintain the status quo.
  • The committee exists to maintain the status quo.

upset / challenge the status quo

02

hear ~ out

  • Stop there, kid. You'll wanna hear him out till the end.
  • Just hear me out before you decide.

Hear me out.

03

know where I stand

  • Personally, I know where I stand.
  • I'd like to know where I stand before the meeting.

04

go public

  • Any punishment would only be necessary if this went public.
  • They went public with the findings last week.

go public with ~ と with を足せば、公表する中身を言えます。 The company went public in 2019.

05

eat at ~

  • The implications of that battle would continue to eat at us.
  • The unanswered email has been eating at me all week.

06

come apart at the seams

  • People tend to come apart at the seams in times like this.
  • The schedule came apart at the seams in week three.

07

tempt ~ into …

  • Don't let chaos tempt you into thoughtless overreaction.
  • Don't let a sale tempt you into buying two.

08

for better or for worse

  • The age we live in, for better or for worse, is one of suppression.
  • For better or for worse, the decision is made.

09

one by one

  • He's steadily getting rid of any obstacles one by one.
  • We checked the files one by one.

10

a full-fledged pro

  • This is why you're not a full-fledged pro yet.
  • She's a full-fledged engineer now.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

The only reason ~ is because …(〜なのは、ひとえに…

The only reason pros can use their powers now is because of the strict code of ethics.

The only reason は主語、because 以下が述部——書き言葉では is that ~ のほうが正式ですが、会話では is because ~ がふつうに使われます。

PATTERN 2

tend to ~(〜しがちだ)

People tend to come apart at the seams in times like this.

名詞の a tendency to ~(〜する傾向)も同じ family で、his tendency to jump in のように使えます。

PATTERN 3

It's only because of ~ that …(〜のおかげでこそ…

It's only because of your wisdom and guidance that I'm the number one hero today.

It is ~ that …

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

hear ~ out

Hear me out.

この 上級版 では、hear ~ out / maintain the status quo / come apart at the seams / for better or for worse を中心に据えました。
