Episode Summary

While Izuku recovers, the rest of the class get their week at work: Best Jeanist explains what patrols are really for as Bakugo terrifies two schoolboys, Gunhead drills Uraraka in disarming a knife, and Jiro leads hostages to safety. At sea, Tsuyu scrubs decks until an urgent call sends her ship after smugglers, and when a villain takes Sirius hostage she refuses to lie over the radio, buying just enough time for the captain.

01

deter ~ from …ing

  • Patrols are mainly meant to deter villains from committing any crimes.
  • The fee is there to deter people from booking twice.

02

a secondary purpose

  • But they also have a secondary purpose.
  • The survey had a secondary purpose.

💡 primary(主たる)と secondary(副次的な)は対で覚えるのが早い。 a secondary effect / secondary use

03

weave a tapestry of ~

  • This helps weave a tapestry of trust between the protectors and the protected.
  • Years of small favors weave a tapestry of goodwill.

04

channel ~ toward …

  • It would be one thing if he channeled all that passion toward becoming a hero.
  • She channeled her frustration toward finishing the draft.

channel ~ into …

05

turn out poorly

  • At this rate, he could turn out quite poorly.
  • The first batch turned out poorly.

turn out well なら、もちろん逆です。

06

be second nature

  • We'll keep on repeating this until it's second nature.
  • After a month, the shortcuts were second nature.

07

be out of touch

  • This is working diligently? I think she's a little out of touch.
  • The pricing shows they're out of touch.

be out of touch with ~ と with を足せば対象を言えます。 We've been out of touch for years.

08

give back to the community

  • Giving back to the community is a big part of being a hero.
  • The shop gives back to the community every winter.

give back だけでも通じますが、to the community を添えるのが定型です。

09

drag one's feet

  • So don't let me see you drag your feet!
  • They've been dragging their feet on the contract.

10

jump to conclusions

  • Guess I jumped to conclusions. Sorry about that.
  • Let's not jump to conclusions before the data comes in.

Don't jump to conclusions.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

be meant to ~(〜するためのものだ)

Patrols are mainly meant to deter villains from committing any crimes.

be supposed to ~(そういう決まりだ)とは別物——be meant to は設計された目的を指します。 This button is meant to reset it.

PATTERN 2

It would be one thing if ~, but …(〜ならまだしも、…)

It would be one thing if he channeled all that passion toward becoming a hero.

PATTERN 3

There's nothing ~ about it.(そこには〜なところなどない)

Trust me — there's nothing cute about it.

There is nothing + 形容詞 + about ~で、その性質を正面から打ち消す形。 There's nothing wrong with it.(何も問題ない)はwith に変えた兄弟形で、こちらは肯定的に使えます。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

be second nature

この 上級版 では、deter ~ from …ing / be second nature / give back to the community / drag one's feet を中心に据えました。
