🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈上級〉第36話の実技試験・実況の分析・リカバリーガールの講評から、手応えのある表現を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

seal off ~

意味〜をふさぐ

  • One-by-one, I'm sealing off every direct path to the escape gate!
  • Police sealed off the street for an hour.

💡 seal は「封をする」——通れないように閉じてしまうのが seal off ~ です。道・区域・出口が目的語になり、警察や消防の報道で頻出します。block(ふさぐ)より厳重で、出入りを完全に断つ響きがあります。

02

a chain reaction

意味連鎖反応

  • I can cause chain reactions depending on what I destroy.
  • One delay set off a chain reaction.

💡 ひとつの出来事が、次を引き起こしていくという形。もとは化学・物理の用語ですが、いまは日程の遅れや値上がりにも広く使われます。set off / trigger a chain reaction が定番の組み合わせ。

03

be two steps ahead

意味二手先を読んでいる

  • Incredible. He's two steps ahead!
  • Their planning team is always two steps ahead.

💡 一歩ではなく二歩——先を読む度合いを数で表す言い方です。be one step ahead が「一歩先んじる」、stay ahead of ~ なら「〜に先んじ続ける」。感心にも、警戒にも使えます。

04

drown out ~

意味〜をかき消す

  • Their opponent will be able to drown out everything around them.
  • The music drowned out the announcement.

💡 音を、別の音で沈めてしまうという図です。drown は「おぼれさせる」——大きい音が小さい音を飲み込むという発想。声・音・意見のどれにも使え、少数意見がかき消されるときにも使われます。

05

a concrete goal

意味具体的な目標

  • Students need to have a concrete goal to focus on.
  • Set a concrete goal for the quarter.

💡 concrete は「コンクリート」から「具体的な」へ。abstract(抽象的な)の対です。目標・計画・提案と組んで、「漠然としていない」ことを示せます。a concrete example(具体例)も同じ使い方。

06

overcome an obstacle

意味障害を乗り越える

  • UA is constantly creating new obstacles that our students have to overcome.
  • The team overcame one obstacle after another.

💡 overcome は「上から来て、越える」。過去形も overcame / overcomeと形が変わるので要注意(overcomed は誤り)。困難・恐れ・偏見など、抽象的なものを目的語にできるのがこの語の強みです。

07

run down the clock

意味時間切れまで粘る

  • Are they gonna run down the clock and hide out the whole time?
  • They ran down the clock to protect the lead.

💡 時計を減らしていく——攻めずに、残り時間を消費するという戦法です。スポーツから来た表現ですが、交渉や議会でも同じ意味で使われます。run out the clock とも言います。

08

have the guts to ~

意味〜する度胸がある

  • Shoji had the guts to face Mr. Snipe head on.
  • Not many people have the guts to say that out loud.

💡 guts は「はらわた」——日本語の「腹が据わっている」と発想がそっくりです。くだけた語なので、ほめ言葉としては親しい間柄向き。gutsy という形容詞もあり、a gutsy decision(思いきった決断)のように使えます。

09

bounce back

意味立ち直る

  • I don't know if he can bounce back from this.
  • Sales bounced back in the spring.

💡 ボールが跳ね返るという図。落ち込みや不調から、元へ戻ることを表します。人にも数字にも体調にも使えて、recover より軽く、前向きな響き。bounce back from ~ と from を足せば原因が言えます。

10

a Herculean task

意味並大抵でない仕事

  • Still, escaping this will be a Herculean task.
  • Rebuilding the archive was a Herculean task.

💡 ギリシャ神話の英雄ヘラクレスに由来する語。大文字で書くのが決まりです。難しいだけでなく、量も膨大——一人では抱えきれない規模の仕事を指します。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第36話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

depending on ~(〜しだいで)

I can cause chain reactions depending on what I destroy.

depending on は前置詞のように働くので、後ろは名詞・動名詞・疑問詞節が来ます。主語との一致は要りません——分詞構文が慣用句になったものだからです。条件をひとことで添えられるので、見積もりや説明で重宝します。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

It's not hard to imagine ~(〜は想像に難くない)

It's not hard to imagine someone feeling as though they have no way to win.

二重否定でやわらげる形です。「よく分かる」と言い切るより、一歩引いた共感になります。imagine のあとは動名詞——意味上の主語は所有格か目的格で置きます(imagine someone feeling)。報告書や講評で使いやすい形です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

If your desire is just to ~, …(ただ〜したいだけなら、…)

If your desire is just to be a hero for no reason, your path isn't going to be easy.

just が「それだけ」と条件を限定し、後半で結果を告げる形です。相手を否定せずに、不足を指摘できるのが利点。desire の位置に goal / aim / plan を入れて応用できます。助言やカウンセリングの場面に向いた構えです。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

bounce back

⭐ 試験に敗れた級友を見ながら、リカバリーガールが漏らした一言。ボールが床から跳ね返る——それがこの句の絵です。落ちた高さと同じだけ戻ってくるという含みがあるので、recover より明るく響きます。人にも、数字にも、体調にも使えて、bounce back from ~ と from を足せば原因まで言えます。励ますときは、相手ではなく時間を主語にすると押しつけになりません——It takes a while to bounce back.

この 上級版 では、seal off ~ / be two steps ahead / run down the clock / bounce back を中心に据えました。
