🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈中級〉第36話に出てくる、会話でそのまま口から出る表現を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

hide out

意味身を隠す

  • Are they gonna run down the clock and hide out the whole time?
  • They hid out in the shed until it passed.

💡 out が「人目の届かないところへ」。見つからないように、しばらくそこにいるのが hide out です。hide が「隠れる」瞬間なら、hide out は「隠れて過ごす」——時間の幅があります。名詞の hideout なら「隠れ家」。

02

get bored

意味退屈してくる

  • I'm getting bored!
  • I got bored waiting and went for a walk.

💡 bored は「退屈させられた」——感情を受け取る側なので -ed です。boring は「退屈させる側」(The film was boring. I was bored.)。get は変化——だんだんそうなる、ということ。

03

can't take it anymore

意味もう我慢できない

  • I don't think I can take it anymore.
  • I can't take it anymore — let's stop here.

💡 この take は「耐える」。can't take ~ で「〜には耐えられない」となります。anymore は否定文とセットで、「これ以上は」という限界を足します。肯定文では any more と分けて書くのがふつう。

04

watch out

意味気をつける

  • Kaminari. Watch out!
  • Watch out for the third step.

💡 差し迫った危険を知らせるときの叫び。watch out for ~ と for を足せば対象を言えます。Look out! とほぼ同じですが、watch out は「これから注意して」と続く場面にも使えます。

05

run away

意味逃げ出す

  • She had to fight because I ran away.
  • Don't run away from it — just say so.

💡 away が「その場から離れて」。run away from ~ と from を足せば、何から逃げたのかを言えます。物理的に走り去るときだけでなく、問題や責任から目をそらす意味でも使う表現です。

06

melt ~

意味〜を溶かす

  • It might look bad if you melt the principal.
  • The sun melted the ice by noon.

💡 固体が液体になるのが melt。自動詞でも他動詞でも使えます(The ice melted. / She melted the butter.)。気持ちにも使えて、My heart melted. は「胸がきゅんとした」。

07

zap ~

意味〜を電撃で撃つ

  • Can't you just zap him or something?
  • The microwave zaps it in thirty seconds.

💡 擬音から生まれた語で、一瞬で、勢いよく当てるという感じです。電気だけでなく、電子レンジで温める意味にも使われます。くだけた語なので、書き言葉では避けるのが無難。

08

waste one's shots

意味持ち球を無駄にする

  • I don't wanna waste all my shots yet.
  • Don't waste your shots on the easy ones.

💡 shot は「一発」——回数が限られているものを指します。give it a shot(試してみる)/call the shots(仕切る)など、shot を使った言い回しは多いので、まとめて覚えると効率がよい語です。

09

be happy for ~

意味〜のことを喜ぶ

  • I'm happy for her.
  • I'm happy for you — you earned it.

💡 for が「その人のために」。自分のことではなく、相手の幸運を喜ぶという形です。be happy about ~ は自分の話——for と about で主役が入れ替わります。祝いの言葉として、そのまま使えます。

10

be slowed by ~

意味〜のせいで動きが鈍る

  • Our opponent's movements are slowed by those weights.
  • The rollout was slowed by one missing approval.

💡 slow の受け身で、原因を by で示す形です。止まったのではなく、遅くなっただけ——be stopped by ~ との差がそこにあります。slow down は自動詞(The car slowed down.)。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第36話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Can't you just ~?(〜すればいいだけでは?)

Can't you just zap him or something?

否定疑問で、簡単な解決を提案する形。just が「それだけで済む」という軽さを足しています。相手が難しく考えすぎているときに出る言い方なので、場合によっては失礼にも響きます。or something を付けると、思いつきであることが伝わって角が取れます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

It might look bad if ~(〜したら体裁が悪いかも)

It might look bad if you melt the principal.

look bad は「印象が悪い」——実害ではなく、見え方の話です。might が推量をやわらげるので、やんわり止めるときにちょうどよい形になります。It looks good on you.(似合っている)と同じ look の用法です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

~, can't you?(〜できるよね?)

You can control animals with your Quirk, can't you?

付加疑問——肯定文には否定の短い問いを足すのが決まりです(You can ~, can't you? / You can't ~, can you?)。語尾を下げれば確認、上げれば本当の質問になります。相手に同意を求めながら話を進められるので、会話をやわらげたいときに便利な形です。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

be happy for ~

⭐ 合格した級友を見て、麗日が口にした一言。for が「その人のために」——自分に得がなくても、相手の幸運を喜ぶという形です。be happy about ~ は自分の話になるので、前置詞ひとつで主役が入れ替わります。祝いの言葉としてそのまま使えて、Congratulations. より気持ちが近いのが持ち味。I'm happy for you. は、相手の決断を認めるときにも使えます。
