Episode Summary

A summer master class drops six students into a staged jewellery-store incident with no briefing beyond the basics: work out what happened, decide whether anyone was at fault, and settle it. Most of the hour is questioning — alibis that fit a little too neatly, a check of what everyone is carrying, and a teacher pointing out that the class had been working from an assumption nobody had actually verified.

assess the situation / determine what happened / be under the assumption that ~ / a logical series of questions

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

assess the situation

  • We will be judging your ability to assess the situation as well as how well you diffuse it.
  • Give me a minute to assess the situation.

02

determine what happened

  • You six will be dispatched to a scene and will need to determine what happened there.
  • We still need to determine what happened to the second file.

03

whether or not ~ was at fault

  • Whether or not a villain was actually at fault.
  • We're still checking whether or not the driver was at fault.

04

be barricaded inside

  • The employees and customers have been taken hostage and are barricaded inside.
  • The crew was barricaded inside for two hours.

05

be under the assumption that ~

  • You were all under the assumption that the villain was a corpse, so you didn't tie him up.
  • We were under the assumption that the deadline had moved.

06

definitive evidence

  • They haven't been able to find definitive evidence.
  • There's still no definitive evidence either way.

evidence は数えない名詞で、a definitive evidence とは言いません(数えるなら a piece of evidence)。

07

a logical series of questions

  • It was smart work getting to that conclusion by asking a logical series of questions.
  • She got there with a logical series of questions.

💡 a series of ~ は「ひと続きの〜」——series は単複同形です(×a serie)。

08

attempt to persuade ~

  • ...and attempt to persuade him?
  • We attempted to persuade them to stay.

09

one's stories all seem to fit

  • Hm. So far their stories all seem to fit.
  • Their stories all seem to fit, which bothers me.

Their stories don't add up.(話が合わない)が対になる定番です。

10

have no opportunity to flee

  • He had no opportunity to flee.
  • With the road closed, they had no opportunity to flee.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

A as well as B(AだけでなくBも)

We will be judging your ability to assess the situation as well as how well you diffuse it.

as well as は「〜と同様に」——重心は前のAにあります(not only A but also B とは逆)。 (The manager, as well as the staff, is coming.)。

PATTERN 2

It's impossible that ~(〜ということはありえない)

There's no back exit, and all the windows are sealed. It's impossible that anyone escaped.

impossible は人を主語にしないのが原則(×He is impossible to come)。 There's no way ~ が口語の言い換え。

PATTERN 3

Even if that were the case, ~(仮にそうだとしても)

Even if that were the case, isn't it a little too reckless?

Even if that's the case

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

Hear me out.

目的語は必ず間に挟みますhear me out/×hear out me)。 Thanks for hearing me out.

この 上級版 では、assess the situation / determine what happened / be under the assumption that ~ / a logical series of questions を中心に据えました。

そして講評の一言が効いています——You were all under the assumption that …
