Episode Summary
A visitor spends a day with the class, and the episode is mostly ordinary courtesy: greetings after a long gap, telling someone not to stand on ceremony, being asked what you have been up to. It ends with meat buns going cold on a table and a conversation that leaves both people feeling better than before.
Do you know about ~? / No need to be so formal. / What have you been up to? / I'll try my best.
🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
- Do you know about the bombing that took place at an industrial complex 18 years ago?
- Do you know about the change to the schedule?
は面識あり、I know about him.
02
That's kinda surprising, huh?
- That's kinda surprising, huh?
- That's kinda surprising, huh? I thought he'd say no.
isn't it? 書くときは somewhat surprising, isn't it?
03
I'm looking forward to learning more about you all.
- I'm looking forward to learning more about you all.
- I'm looking forward to working with you.
💡 look forward to の to は前置詞——後ろは動名詞です(×look forward to learn)。 you all は「皆さん」で、米南部の y'all はここから来ています。
04
No need to be so formal.
- No need to be so formal.
- No need to be so formal — just call me by my first name.
💡 There's no need ~ の There's が落ちた形——会話ではよく省きます。 No need to apologize. / No need to rush.
05
Just pretend that I'm not here.
- Just pretend that I'm not here.
- Pretend I'm not here and keep going.
(He pretended to be asleep.)。
06
What have you been up to?
- What have you been up to out in this rain?
- What have you been up to lately?
What are you up to? は「今なにしてる?」、What have you been up to?
07
I was starving afterward.
- I was starving afterward, so I stopped to grab a bite.
- I was starving afterward and ate two.
08
Always thinking of others, huh?
- Of course you did. Always thinking of others, huh?
- Always thinking of others, huh? Take a break sometime.
💡 主語と be 動詞が落ちた形——You're always thinking ~ の省略です。
09
Yeah. I get what you mean.
- Yeah. I get what you mean.
- I get what you mean, but the timing's bad.
I know what you mean. I get what you mean.
- I'll try my best.
- I'll try my best to have it ready by Friday.

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
I'm surprised (that) ~(〜なのが意外だ)
With how popular you are, I'm surprised you're not mobbed everywhere you go.
I'm surprised to hear ~ のようにto 不定詞も置けます。
- I'm surprised you remembered.(よく覚えてたね)
- I'm surprised it's still open.(まだ開いてるとは意外だ)
PATTERN 2
What do you suppose ~?(〜
But what do you suppose he meant by it?
疑問詞 + do you suppose + 主語 + 動詞の語順で、中は平叙文のまま(×what do you suppose did he mean)。
- What do you suppose they'll decide?(どう決めると思う?)
- Where do you suppose it went?(どこへ行ったんだろうね)
PATTERN 3
I'm not writing an expose, even if I did have evidence.
even if は「たとえ〜でも」——even though(事実として〜だが)とは別です。
- Even if I knew, I wouldn't say.(仮に知っていても言わない)
- Even though I knew, I said nothing.(知ってはいたが黙っていた)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use expression
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
What have you been up to?
- What have you been up to lately?
- What have you been up to since we last talked?
- Not much — what about you?
What are you up to? What have you been up to?

Do you know about ~? / No need to be so formal. / What have you been up to? / I'll try my best.
What have you been up to?(何してたの?)は、返しの Not much.
