🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈上級〉第7話の緑谷の作戦立案の独白、モニター室でのオールマイトの戦術解説、そして飯田の悪役演技から、読み解いて評する言い回しを10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

go rogue

意味勝手に単独行動をとる

  • That probably means Kacchan's gone rogue.
  • One team went rogue and shipped without approval.

💡 rogue は群れを離れた一匹——統制から外れる形です。disobey が命令に背くのに対し、go rogue は「勝手に動き出す」——本人は正しいつもりなことも多いのが違い。go + 形容詞「その状態になる」(go bad / go quiet)。組織・部署・AIにも使われる、ニュース向きの語です。

02

laugh behind one's back

意味陰で笑う

  • Bet you've been laughing behind my back, huh?
  • They were laughing behind his back the whole time.

💡 背中側で笑う——本人のいないところでという形です。make fun of ~ が面と向かってもありうるのに対し、laugh behind one's back は「隠れて」——裏切りの匂いがするのが違い。所有格は笑われる側(behind my back=私の陰で)。talk behind one's back(陰口を言う)も同じ作り。

03

think very highly of oneself

意味自分を過大に見ている

  • Young Bakugo thinks very highly of himself.
  • He thinks very highly of himself for someone so new.

💡 think highly of ~ は高く買う——その対象が自分の形です。be confident が自信なのに対し、think highly of oneself は「うぬぼれ」——他人からの評として使うのが違い。very / too を挟んで程度を足せます。think highly of + 他人なら純粋なほめ言葉になります。

04

one's demise

意味その身の破滅

  • It may end up being his demise.
  • Overconfidence was his demise.

💡 demise は終わり・死——格式ある語です。failure が失敗なのに対し、demise は「そこで終わる」——取り返しがつかないのが違い。the demise of ~ の形でも使い(the demise of the company)、報道・歴史・追悼の語彙。会話ではやや大げさに響きます。

05

double as ~

意味〜を兼ねる

  • He changed his trajectory while in midair using a blast that doubled as a smokescreen.
  • The sofa doubles as a bed.

💡 二役をこなす——本来の用途に加えてもう一つという形です。be used as ~ が用途なのに対し、double as ~ は「両方を同時に」——一石二鳥なのが違い。as のうしろは名詞家具・部屋・道具と相性がよく、人にも使えます(doubles as the coach)。

06

render ~ helpless

意味〜を手も足も出なくする

  • My dastardly tricks have rendered you helpless!
  • The outage rendered the system helpless.

💡 render はその状態にする——make の格式ある版です。make ~ helpless が中立なのに対し、render ~ helpless は硬い書き言葉——宣言めいて響くのが違い。render + 目的語 + 形容詞の形で、render ~ useless / obsolete / impossible が定番。作中は悪役演技なので、わざと大げさです。

07

come off as ~

意味〜という印象を与える

  • He doesn't come off as a guy with a strategy.
  • She came off as rude, but she wasn't.

💡 そう受け取られる——本人の意図とは別という形です。seem が広く見えるのに対し、come off as ~ は「他人の目にどう映るか」——実際とのずれを含むのが違い。as のうしろは名詞でも形容詞でも可How did I come off?「どう見えた?」という便利な問い。

08

in terms of ~

意味〜という点では

  • He's completely outmatched in terms of combat power.
  • In terms of cost, this is the better option.

💡 terms は物差し——その尺度で見ればという形です。about ~ が話題なのに対し、in terms of ~ は「その観点で測ると」——比べる軸を示すのが違い。of のうしろは名詞か動詞ing報告書・比較・分析で最も使う前置き表現のひとつです。

09

the instant ~

意味〜した瞬間に

  • I knew you would come here alone the instant that Bakugo ran off by himself.
  • I knew the instant I opened the door.

💡 その一瞬に——時間差がまったくないという形です。when が幅のある「〜のとき」なのに対し、the instant ~ は「まさにその瞬間」——即座なのが違い。接続詞として働くのでうしろは主語+動詞the moment ~ / as soon as ~ も同じ働きです。

10

devote oneself to ~

意味〜に身を捧げる

  • I need to temporarily devote myself to criminal intent.
  • She devoted herself to the research for a decade.

💡 devote はすべてを差し向ける——そこに注ぎ込む形です。work on ~ が取り組むのに対し、devote oneself to ~ は「ほかを捨てる」——覚悟があるのが違い。to のうしろは名詞か動詞ing(× devote myself to study の study は名詞なら可)。be devoted to ~ なら状態を表します。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第7話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Since when + 疑問文(いつからそうなった?)

Since when can she make herself float?

「いつから」を問う形ですが、中身はほぼ反語です。When did she start ~? が素直に時期を聞くのに対し、Since when ~? は「そんなの聞いていない」——驚きや不満がのるのが違い。うしろは疑問文の語順(助動詞・be動詞+主語)で、時制は現在形のままにするのがふつうです。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

whether A or B(AだろうとBだろうと)

That's a poor strategy, whether you're a hero or a villain.

どちらでも結論は同じ——譲歩の副詞節です。if が「〜かどうか」を問うのに対し、whether A or B は「どちらでも構わない」——結論が先に決まっているのが違い。whether ~ or not も同じ働きで、この用法では if に置き換えられないのが要点です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

To + 動詞の原形 が主語になる形(〜することは…だ)

To employ such a strong attack indoors is inviting the destruction of the stronghold you should be protecting.

不定詞をそのまま主語に据える形です。Using ~ is …(動名詞)が日常的なのに対し、To + 動詞の原形 は硬く、一般論の響き——格言や講評に向くのが違い。長くなるときは It is ~ to …形式主語に逃がすのがふつうで、作中はあえて重い語順を選んでいます。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

go rogue

⭐ かっちゃんが指示を無視して突っ走っていると、緑谷が読んだ一言。rogue は群れを離れた一匹——統制から外れて動き出すという形です。disobey が「命令に背く」と反抗を言うのに対し、go rogue は「勝手に動き出す」——本人は正しいつもりでいることが多いところまで含むのが違います。だから、組織のなかの一人や一部署について言うのが自然で、Marketing went rogue and rewrote the copy.(マーケがひとりで走って原稿を書き換えた)のように使えます。go + 形容詞「その状態になる」を作る形の一つ(go bad / go quiet / go viral)。a rogue + 名詞 と形容詞でも使え、a rogue employee / a rogue state のようにニュースでも頻出します。
