🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈上級〉第9話の報道の描写、飯田家とインゲニウムの話、オールマイトと緑谷の秘密をめぐる会話、そしてサーティーンの講義から、改まって語る言い回しを10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

on a daily basis

意味日々のこととして

  • His leadership and wisdom remind me on a daily basis that I attend the world's most prestigious educational institution.
  • We review the numbers on a daily basis.

💡 日ごとの単位で——毎日のこととしてという形です。every day が素直に「毎日」なのに対し、on a daily basis は改まった言い方——報告書や公式の場に合うのが違い。daily を weekly / monthly に替えればそのまま単位が変わります文末に置くのがふつうです。

02

get one's hands on ~

意味〜を手に入れる

  • Everyone wanted to get their hands on All Might.
  • I finally got my hands on a copy.

💡 手が届く——ようやく手中に収める形です。obtain が事務的なのに対し、get one's hands on ~ は「探し回った末に」——手間や競争が前提なのが違い。所有格を主語に合わせる(got their hands on)。捕まえてやるという物騒な意味でも使われます。

03

can't argue with ~

意味〜には文句のつけようがない

  • I feared this might happen, but I can't argue with the system I chose!
  • You can't argue with the results.

💡 言い返せない——正しさを認める形です。agree が賛成なのに対し、can't argue with ~ は「認めざるを得ない」——不本意がにじむのが違い。can't argue with that会話で最も多い形で、「たしかにね」という相づちになります。

04

be suited to ~

意味〜に向いている

  • Wanting a job and being suited to it are quite different things.
  • He isn't suited to desk work.

💡 suit は合う——その役に釣り合う形です。be good at ~ が能力なのに対し、be suited to ~ は「性質が合う」——向き不向きの話なのが違い。to のうしろは名詞か動詞ingで、be suited for ~ もほぼ同じ。採用や配置の話で頻出します。

05

strive to ~

意味〜しようと努める

  • As the second oldest Iida son, I strive to be just like him.
  • We strive to answer within a day.

💡 strive は力を尽くす——格式ある tryです。try to ~ が中立なのに対し、strive to ~ は「努め続ける」——まだ届いていないのが前提なのが違い。うしろは動詞の原形strive for + 名詞(strive for excellence)の形も定番で、企業理念や宣誓の語です。

06

come with ~

意味〜がついて回る

  • You need to think carefully about the responsibility that comes with this power.
  • The job comes with long hours.

💡 一緒についてくる——切り離せない形です。have が持っているのに対し、come with ~ は「もれなく付属する」——望むと望まざるとにかかわらずなのが違い。主語は付属される側(The job comes with ~)。付属品にも責任にも使える便利な動詞です。

07

come for ~

意味〜を狙って来る

  • Villains across the globe would come for you, trying to take it.
  • They'll come for the title next season.

💡 そこへ向かって来る——奪いに来る形です。attack が襲うのに対し、come for ~ は「目当てがある」——狙いが定まっているのが違い。迎えに来るという穏やかな意味もあり(I'll come for you at six)、文脈で怖さが決まります

08

carry ~ over to …

意味〜を…に持ち越す

  • Carry those lessons over to this class.
  • We'll carry the balance over to next month.

💡 持ったまま越えていく——次の場面へ引き継ぐ形です。remember が覚えているのに対し、carry ~ over to … は「そのまま使う」——場面が変わるのが前提なのが違い。目的語は間に置ける(carry them over)。残高・休暇・課題の持ち越しにもそのまま使えます。

09

push ~ past the limits

意味〜を限界の先まで酷使する

  • I'm pushing my hero form too far past the limits.
  • He pushed his body past the limits.

💡 限界の線を越えて押す——無理をさせる形です。work hard が努力なのに対し、push ~ past the limits は「壊れる域」——代償があるのが違い。push oneself なら自分を追い込むこと、push the limits だけなら「限界を押し広げる」という前向きな意味になります。

10

overlook ~

意味〜を見落とす

  • We often overlook how unsafe they can actually be.
  • It's easy to overlook the small print.

💡 上から見て通り過ぎる——気づかずにいる形です。ignore がわざと無視するのに対し、overlook ~ は「うっかり」——悪意がないのが違い。大目に見るという意味もあり(I'll overlook it this once)、「見晴らす」という物理の意味まで持つ一語です。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第9話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

同格の that(名詞 + that + 主語 + 動詞)

The news that All Might had been hired as a faculty member at UA took the entire nation by surprise.

名詞の中身を that 節でそのまま説明する形です。関係代名詞の that が名詞を修飾するのに対し、同格の that は「=」でつなぐ——that 節だけで文が完成しているのが見分け方。news / fact / idea / belief / rumor など「中身のある名詞」にしか付きません。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

疑問詞 + in the world(いったい〜)

Who in the world could have trespassed on the campus grounds?

疑問詞のうしろに置いて驚きを足す形です。Who did it? が素直な問いなのに対し、Who in the world ~? は「信じられない」——答えが想像できないのが違い。on earth / the heck も同じ働きで、in the world がいちばん穏やか疑問詞の直後に置くのが決まりです。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

want + 目的語 + 過去分詞(〜されたくない)

Unless you want your name dragged through the mud.

目的語のうしろに過去分詞を置く——「〜が…される」を丸ごと望む形です。want to be ~ は自分が受けるのに対し、want + 目的語 + 過去分詞 は「他人や物が受ける」——被害にも依頼にも使えるのが違い。have / get でも同じ形が作れ(have my hair cut)、そちらは「してもらう」寄りになります。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

on a daily basis

⭐ 取材に応じた生徒が、オールマイトの指導ぶりを語った一言。日という単位で——毎日くり返されることとしてという形です。every day が「毎日」とそのまま言うのに対し、on a daily basis は一段あらたまった言い方——報告書・面接・公式の場に合うのが違います。だから、仕事で何をしているかを説明するときにちょうどよく、I work with our overseas team on a daily basis.(海外チームとは日常的にやり取りしています)のように使えます。daily のところを入れ替えれば単位がそのまま変わり(on a weekly / monthly / yearly basis)、on a regular basis(定期的に)まで同じ型でまかなえます。置き場所は文末が自然です。
