🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

show one's true colors

  • You're starting to show your true colors.
  • He showed his true colors the moment money came up.

02

side with ~

  • Betray whoever you're working for and side with me.
  • The board sided with the founder.

03

turn ~ over to the police

  • If you won't help me, I'll turn you over to the police.
  • They turned the footage over to the police.

目的語は over の前(turn him over)。

04

pull one's weight

  • If either one of us doesn't pull our weight here, then this plan doesn't work.
  • Everyone on the team pulls their weight.

(He's not pulling his weight.)、職場の不満をやわらかく言うのに便利です。

05

go one's separate ways

  • Once the operation is over, we'll go our separate ways.
  • After the project, we went our separate ways.

separate ways と複数形で、主語も複数(× go my separate way)。

06

get off scot-free

  • I doubt you'll get off scot free.
  • Somehow he got off scot-free.

07

know ~ backwards and forwards

  • Make sure you know it backwards and forwards.
  • She knows the manual backwards and forwards.

know ~ inside out もほぼ同じ意味。

08

cause an uproar

  • That blood's definitely brewing, but it's way too soon to cause an uproar.
  • The announcement caused an uproar.

09

go soft

  • That man had my respect, my affection. But now he's going soft.
  • The boss has gone soft since the merger.

go soft on ~ なら「〜に手心を加える」。go + 形容詞は「〜の状態になる」の型です(go bad / go quiet)。

10

to the best of one's ability

  • Even if it's a little bit over time, to the best of my ability.
  • I'll do it to the best of my ability.

as hard as I can が努力の量なのに対し、to the best of one's ability は「持てる力の範囲で」——限界があると認めているのが誠実さ。to the best of my knowledge(私の知るかぎり)も同じ型の定番で、どちらも書き言葉で重宝します。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Assuming +

Assuming he's still in Tokyo, there are only two stations that use that song.

Assuming that ~ と that を入れても同じ。Assuming so / Assuming not

PATTERN 2

Since it takes + 人 + 時間 + to + 動詞の原形, …(〜に…

Since it takes him 50 minutes to get there, he must be at Musashi Koganei station.

人を入れない It takes 30 minutes to ~ も可。

PATTERN 3

As long as + 主語 + 動詞(〜しさえすれば)

As long as you can call the police, they'll arrest Yano for blackmail.

うしろは未来のことでも現在形(× as long as you will call)。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

pull one's weight

He's not pulling his weight. one's は主語に合わせて変える(pull my / your / their weight)。
