🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈中級〉第10話の楽屋での勧誘と、励ましの場面から、そのまま口から出る言い方を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

team up with ~

意味〜と組む

  • If you're splitting up, then team up with me.
  • We teamed up with a smaller studio.

💡 チームになる——力を合わせるという形です。join が仲間入りなのに対し、team up with ~ は「対等に組む」——それぞれ持ち場があるのが前提。with ~ で相手を言い、team up to + 動詞の原形 なら目的を言えます(team up to fix it)。仕事にも遊びにも使える便利な言い方です。

02

split up

意味解散する/別れる

  • You two are destined to split up, right?
  • The band split up last year.

💡 分かれて別々になるという形です。leave が去ることなのに対し、split up は「組が解ける」——両方が離れるのが違い。コンビ・バンド・カップルのどれにも使え、split up with ~ なら「〜と別れる」。split の過去形も split(形が変わりません)。

03

make it big

意味大きく売れる

  • I promise that will make it big.
  • They finally made it big overseas.

💡 大きくやり遂げる——成功して名が売れるという形です。succeed が一般的な成功なのに対し、make it big は「有名になる規模」——芸能・音楽・商売の話で使われます。make it だけでも「成功する」で、big が規模を足している形。hit it big もほぼ同じ意味です。

04

draw out one's best qualities

意味〜のよさを引き出す

  • I can draw out your best qualities.
  • A good editor draws out your best qualities.

💡 中にあるものを外へ引き出すという形です。praise がほめることなのに対し、draw out ~ は「持っているものを表に出させる」——もともとあったのが前提。draw out the best in ~ という形も同じ意味。bring out ~ に置き換えられ、そちらのほうが会話寄りです。

05

lose one's knack for ~

意味〜の勘を失う

  • When I saw your act today, I thought he had lost his knack for comedy.
  • I've lost my knack for names.

💡 knack はこつ・要領——それが抜けたという形です。get worse が下手になることなのに対し、lose one's knack は「できていたのに」——以前はできたのが前提。for のうしろは名詞か ~ing。have a knack for ~(こつを心得ている)と対で覚えると定着します。

06

watch out for ~

意味〜に気をつける

  • You got to watch out for the lit cigarettes everywhere.
  • Watch out for the step.

💡 目を配って警戒するという形です。be careful が全般の注意なのに対し、watch out for ~ は「これに注意」——対象がはっきりしているのが違い。Watch out! だけなら「あぶない!」。look out for ~ はほぼ同じ意味で、人に使うと「気にかける」の意味にもなります。

意味元どおりになる

  • Even if I lose it, my life will just go back to how it was before.

意味〜をひっくり返す

  • I'll turn the comedy industry on its head.
  • The findings turn the theory on its head.

💡 頭を下にして立てる——常識を逆さまにするという絵です。change が変えることなのに対し、turn ~ on its head は「前提ごとひっくり返す」——規模が大きいのが違い。its は対象に合わせて変わります(turn my life on its head)。業界・常識・理論と相性のいい言い方です。

10

stay away

意味近寄らない

  • I already told you to stay away.
  • Stay away from the edge.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第10話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

What made + 人 + 動詞の原形?(どうして〜するようになったの)

What made you start doing it in the first place?

make + 人 + 動詞の原形で「〜させる」。それを疑問文にすると「何があなたを〜させたのか」——きっかけを尋ねる形になります。Why did you start ~? が理由を問うのに対し、What made you ~? は「出来事」を聞いている——責める響きが出にくいのが利点です。to は入りません(× What made you to start)。面接・取材・雑談で使い勝手のいい一文です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Do you think it's possible for + 人 + to + 動詞の原形?(〜してもらうことはできますか)

Do you think it's possible for you to forgive me?

for + 人がto 不定詞の意味上の主語——「誰がするのか」を to の前に置くのがこの型の肝です。Can you ~? が直接なのに対し、Do you think it's possible for you to ~? は二重に距離を取る——頼みにくいことを切り出すときの形。It's possible for ~ to … は「〜が…することはありうる」という一般論にも使えます。長いぶん、へりくだった響きになります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

I need you to + 動詞の原形(〜してほしい)

I know it'll be hard, but I need you to do what Yano's crew tell you to.

need + 人 + to + 動詞の原形で「〜してもらう必要がある」。Please ~ が依頼なのに対し、I need you to ~ は「必要だ」と事情を前に出す——断りにくいが、命令にも聞こえないという絶妙な位置にあります。want you to ~ より切迫、must より角が立たない。職場でいちばん使う依頼の形のひとつです。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

team up with ~

⭐ 解散しそうなコンビへ、高校生が持ちかける一言。チームになる——力を合わせるという形です。join が「仲間に入れてもらう」のに対し、team up with ~ は「対等に組む」——それぞれに持ち場があるのが前提です。だから、上下のない相手にこそ使いやすい言い方。with ~ で相手を言い、team up to + 動詞の原形 なら目的まで言えます(team up to fix it=力を合わせて直す)。on ~ を足せば案件を指定でき、Let's team up on the proposal. は「その提案、一緒にやりませんか」。仕事の誘い、部活の相談、共同作業——場面を選ばず使えます。
