🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
- You gotta nip it in the bud or it just comes back.
- We nipped that rumor in the bud.
目的語は nip の直後(nip it in the bud)。
- But if the alternative is evil running rampant, I'll have to turn a blind eye to it.
- Management turned a blind eye to it for years.
- You're scared that they're getting wise to your brainwashing and money grubbing.
- The customers are getting wise to the trick.
04
thrust ~ into the limelight
- Society thrust me into the limelight.
- One clip thrust her into the limelight.
thrust は過去形も thrust(形が変わりません)。
- Now that you've got it, why not dig a little deeper?
- Let's dig a little deeper before we decide.
- I appreciate your words, Dobu. I'll take all of them to heart.
- Don't take it to heart — he says that to everyone.
いい意味なら「しっかり受け止める」、否定形なら「気にするな」——Don't take it to heart.
- But in some ways, she brought it upon herself.
- He brought the whole mess upon himself.
be one's fault
- She won't stand up for herself.
- You have to stand up for yourself in that job.
stand up for ~ と人を入れれば「〜をかばう」(stand up for a friend)。
- Dobu got his claws in her before she knew any better.
- The company got its claws in him early.
- You did make that money at my expense.
- The joke was at her expense.
お金にも使え(at company expense=会社もちで)、笑いの的にする意味でも使われます(a joke at his expense)。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Why don't you try reflecting on the principles that drove you to act?
try calling him なら「ためしに電話してみる」、try to call him なら「なんとか電話しようとする」。Why don't you ~?
- Why don't you try writing it down?(書き出してみたらどうですか)
- Why don't you try asking them directly?(直接聞いてみたらどうですか)
PATTERN 2
nothing more than ~(〜にすぎない)
Following Dobu's instructions was nothing more than her strategy for survival.
- It was nothing more than a misunderstanding.(ただの行き違いにすぎなかった)
- This is nothing less than a breakthrough.(これはまさしく突破口だ)
PATTERN 3
despite that, ~(それなのに)
But despite that, you're more narcissistic than anyone.
in spite of that
- Despite that, the numbers went up.(それなのに数字は伸びた)
- Despite the fact that he apologized, nothing changed.(謝ったにもかかわらず、何も変わらなかった)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
take ~ to heart
- Don't take it to heart — he says that to everyone.
- She took the feedback to heart and rewrote it.
- I took his advice to heart.
(She took the feedback to heart.=助言を素直に受け入れた)、否定の命令形なら「気にするな」(Don't take it to heart.) 目的語は to の前(× take to heart it)。
