Episode Summary
Odokawa goes to the wharf to get his friend back, with Dobu riding along and a young officer offering backup he doesn't want. 🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
- This is gonna be a pain in the ass.
- Parking around here is a pain in the ass.
やや下品なので、職場では a pain in the neck かただの a pain に言い換えるのが安全(It's such a pain.)。
- Why don't you take him and get out of here?
- Grab your things and get out of here.
強い口調なら「出ていけ」、驚いたときの Get out of here!
- Your mom tried to open it through trial and error.
- We got there by trial and error.
and でつなぐ決まった形で、冠詞は付けません(× a trial and an error)。through / by trial and error
04
get in a lot of trouble
- You got in a lot of trouble later.
- I got in a lot of trouble for that.
get in / get into どちらも使え、for ~ で理由を言います。be in trouble なら「まずい状態にある」——get が「なる」、be が「である」です。
05
What are you getting at?
- What are you getting at here?
- I don't follow — what are you getting at?
What do you mean? What are you getting at? What are you suggesting?。
- Really? Well, that does pose a problem.
- The new rule poses a problem for us.
be a problem が状態なのに対し、pose a problem は「生じさせる」——原因のほうが主語になります。pose a risk / a threat / a challenge / a question
- I felt so bad for him.
- I feel bad for whoever has to clean this up.
- Sometimes he would eat over at my place, but for the most part, he'd refuse.
- For the most part, the trip went well.
- Hey, you'll fall if you don't quit messing around.
- Stop messing around and finish it.
- I'll check back in in about three days.
- I'll check back in after lunch.
in が二つ並ぶことがありますが(check back in in three days)、後ろの in は「〜後に」——誤植ではありません。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Do you happen to know ~?(もしご存じでしたら)
Do you happen to know where he was living prior to his arrival here?
Do you know ~? Do you happen to know ~? うしろは疑問詞の平叙語順(where he was living、× where was he living)——間接疑問の語順がここでの要点です。
- Do you happen to know what time it starts?(何時開始かご存じですか)
- Do you happen to know who left this?(これを置いた人をご存じですか)
PATTERN 2
Is there some sort of problem with + 動詞ing?(〜に何か差し支えでも?)
Is there some sort of problem with him moving?
Why can't he move? Is there some sort of problem with ~?
- Is there some sort of problem with paying by card?(カード払いに何か問題でも?)
- Is there a problem with us starting early?(早めに始めるのは差し支えありますか)
PATTERN 3
Now that you're talking about it, I think it's coming back.
(Now you mention it)。Now that you mention it(そういえば)はそのまま覚えたい決まり文句で、相手の言葉で思い出したときに使えます。
- Now that I think about it, that's odd.(考えてみると、それは変だ)
- Now that you mention it, I never got a reply.(そういえば返事をもらっていない)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
feel bad for ~
- I feel bad for whoever has to clean this up.
- I felt bad for her, but there was nothing I could do.
- Don't feel bad for me — I chose this.
feel bad for ~ は「相手が気の毒」、feel bad about ~ は「自分が申し訳ない」——I feel bad for you.(あなたが気の毒だ)とI feel bad about it.(あれは申し訳なかった)で、立場がまるごと入れ替わります。
