Episode Summary

A brutal fan letter lands on Homo sapiens' radio show and neither comedian can let it go — one starts talking about dissolving the group, the other can't admit how much it stung. Odokawa spends the night trading questions with Dr. Goriki about sleep, marriage and the nurse he won't admit he likes, then picks up Imai, an idol fan who can analyze Mystery Kiss for a whole fare but can't scrape together the money to get home.

give ~ props for … / That being said, ~ / mistake A for B / cease to exist

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

give ~ props for …

  • I want to give you guys props for your conviction and self-worth.
  • I'll give her props for showing up at all.

02

That being said, ~

  • That being said, I think it's embarrassing for professionals to slander people who don't recognize your talent.
  • That being said, the price is still too high.

Having said that もほぼ同じ。

03

acknowledge one's flaws

  • Until you acknowledge your flaws, improve on your craft, and reach a higher level of success, this reaction seems defensive and douchey.
  • The report acknowledges its own flaws.

04

mistake A for B

  • Never mistake arrogance for confidence.
  • People often mistake shyness for rudeness.

confuse A with B とほぼ同じですが、mistake A for B は「AをBだと思い込む」——向きが一方通行なのが違い。 Never mistake A for B.

05

play ~ off

  • You managed to play it off with your energy, but the final joke of your solo show isn't funny when written out.
  • He tripped but played it off like nothing happened.

代名詞は off の前(play it off)。play it off as ~ で「〜のように見せかける」。

06

a one-way street

  • Being a creator is a one-way street.
  • Trust isn't a one-way street.

07

dumb ~ down

  • Dumbing things down for the masses makes for weak results.
  • Don't dumb it down too much.

08

keep one's mouth shut

  • Keep your mouth shut, idiots.
  • I kept my mouth shut through the whole meeting.

09

dissolve the group

  • What if I said I think we should dissolve the group?
  • They dissolved the partnership last spring.

10

cease to exist

  • If that were true, all unrequited love would cease to exist.
  • The department ceased to exist after the merger.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

It is ~ who …(強調構文)

It's typically your own fans who attend these gigs, so it's only natural to expect guaranteed laughs.

Your own fans typically attend ~ と内容は同じですが、「ほかでもなく身内のファンが」と的が絞られます。人なら who、物なら that / which。強調される語が複数でも It is のまま(× They are your own fans who ~)なのが要点です。

PATTERN 2

It seems to me like ~(私には〜に見える)

It seems to me like you're not equally committed.

You are not ~ と言い切るのに比べ、It seems to me like ~ は逃げ道を残す——相手が否定しやすいぶん、角が立ちません。 It seems to me that ~で、like は会話寄りのくだけた形。

PATTERN 3

I'd rather listen to the actual song.

うしろは動詞の原形(× would rather to listen)。 (I'd rather walk than wait.)。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

That being said, ~
