Episode Summary

The Nerima investigation is quietly withdrawn, but nobody involved is satisfied — the missing girl turns out to be the daughter of a man Dobu's boss used to know. Dobu climbs into Odokawa's cab wanting the dash cam data kept quiet, and when threats fail he goes looking for the one thing that does move a man with nothing to lose: a short list of friends. Elsewhere, Kakihana is certain the woman he has never met is real.

look into ~ / the fall guy / put ~ up to …

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

look into ~

  • But I need you to look into her whereabouts.
  • We're looking into what went wrong.

I'll look into it.(確認しておきます)は仕事の返事としてそのまま使えます。

02

the fall guy

  • If anything, I was set up as the fall guy here.
  • They needed a fall guy, and he was closest.

be set up as the fall guy が定型で、a scapegoat はほぼ同じ意味のかたい言い方です。

03

get one's hands on ~

  • My initial thought was that if I could get my hands on your dash cam data, I could use what's on it as something to blackmail you with.
  • I finally got my hands on a copy.

04

put ~ up to …

  • There's only one guy who could have put her up to all this.
  • Somebody put him up to it.

ask が頼むことなのに対し、put ~ up to … to のうしろは名詞か it(put him up to it)。

05

snoop around for ~

  • If anyone shows up snooping around for it, I want you to let me know.
  • Someone's been snooping around for the old files.

06

reach someone's ears

  • And that's reached the boss's ears as well.
  • I'd rather this didn't reach his ears.

07

be quick on the uptake

  • You're quick on the uptake, Oda Kawa.
  • She's quick on the uptake — you only have to say it once.

反対は slow on the uptake(のみこみが悪い)。

08

bring ~ down

  • If Yano is involved in the missing persons case, then I can find evidence of that and use it to bring him down.
  • One report brought down the whole board.

代名詞は down の前(bring him down)。

09

rattle one's cage

  • That did seem to rattle your cage, though.
  • Something in that email rattled his cage.

Who rattled your cage?

10

in all likelihood

  • So if someone shows up trying to take your dash cam data, in all likelihood it'll be Yano or one of his henchmen.
  • In all likelihood, the flight will be delayed.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Don't interrogate me like you're some sort of cop in a crime drama.

正式には as if / as thoughで、like はくだけた言い方。 like + 名詞(like a cop)とはうしろの形で見分けます。

PATTERN 2

That was quite the risk you took out of cowardice. What if I'd actually pulled the trigger?

I'd は I had の短縮(I would ではありません)。

PATTERN 3

That was quite the risk you took out of cowardice.

quite the gentleman(たいしたお人だ)のように使います。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

look into ~

I'll look into it.(確認しておきます)は仕事の返事としてそのまま使える定型。 look at ~(見る)や look for ~(探す)とは別物——into が「中身まで」を担っています。
