Episode Summary
Tanaka tells his own story. In the third grade, a classroom crackdown on inequality turned eraser collecting into a status war, and losing an online auction for a rare one — paid for with his father's credit card — became the defeat he never got over. Years later the same string of letters appears at the top of a gacha game's rankings, and five million yen deep, he decides the boy he used to be is owed something.
come to despise ~ / lose all restraint / go numb / in hindsight
🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
- I've since come to despise competing with others as well as anything without a real form.
- He came to despise the very word 'networking'.
come to のうしろは知覚や心情の動詞が中心で、come to realize / come to accept と応用できます。
- I pretty much lost all restraint by this point.
- He loses all restraint at a buffet.
- Besides, I didn't bear them any resentment at all.
- She bears him no resentment for it.
- I dropped thousands of yen on a game like it was nothing. I'd gone numb.
- After the third rejection I just went numb.
- I felt something like a premonition earlier.
- I had a premonition about that meeting.
have / feel / get a premonition と組み、a hunch はもっと軽い「勘」。
- That would be by holding tightly onto a powerful attachment that transcends all else.
- The book transcends its genre.
💡 trans(越えて)+ scend(登る)——枠の外へ出るという形です。
- In hindsight, this piece of shit was hardly worth it.
- In hindsight, we should have waited.
- But these low class techniques I tried to pass off as high class ones were always a tragic failure.
- He passed the copy off as an original.
pretend が演じることなのに対し、pass ~ off as … 代名詞は off の前(pass it off as ~)。
- A handful of students were always there to fawn over his new acquisitions.
- Everyone fawns over the new hire.
- Collecting erasers was the last hope we could cling to for squeezing into the top.
- He still clings to the idea that it'll sell.

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
It was as though +
It was as though I'd been arrested on false charges and was desperately trying to prove my innocence.
as though は as if と同じ——事実に反する見立てを置く形です。
- It was as though nothing had happened.(何事もなかったかのようだった)
- She looked as though she'd seen a ghost.(幽霊でも見たような顔だった)
PATTERN 2
the reason 主語 + 動詞 + is because …(〜したのは…
I think the reason I decided to step into the ring and participate in this pointless showdown between the two of us was because I was fortunate enough to already possess one rare eraser.
硬い文章では the reason ... is that ~ に直すのが無難です。
- The reason I called is because I need a favor.(電話したのは、お願いがあるからです)
- The reason it failed is that nobody tested it.(失敗したのは、誰も試さなかったからです)
PATTERN 3
No matter how I looked at it, it was clearly my fault.
No matter how + 形容詞/副詞 + 主語 + 動詞の順が基本で(no matter how hard I try)、作中のように形容詞を挟まない形も成立します。 No matter what / who / when / where
- No matter how hard I try, it won't close.(どんなに頑張っても閉まらない)
- No matter what he says, don't sign it.(彼が何と言おうと署名しないで)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
in hindsight
- In hindsight, we should have waited.
- In hindsight, it was obvious.
- In hindsight, I'm glad it fell through.
反省にも、安堵にも使えます——In hindsight, I'm glad it fell through.

この 上級版 では、come to despise ~ / lose all restraint / bear ~ resentment / go numb / transcend ~ のような自分の内側を言葉にする言い回しを中心に据えました。
In hindsight, ~(今にして思えば)、No matter how I looked at it, ~(どう考えても)、It was as though ~(まるで〜のようだった)——過去を筋道立てて語り直す型が並んでいます。
as though + 過去完了 / the reason ~ is because …
