🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

hold water

  • If the two of you are associated in any way, then the premise of that threat doesn't hold water.
  • His alibi doesn't hold water.

02

an inside job

  • It would seem like it's an inside job.
  • The police think it was an inside job.

an inside man なら「内通者」です。

03

have a knack for ~

  • Thankfully, I have a knack for figuring out exactly what makes you afraid.
  • She has a knack for remembering names.

be good at が技量なのに対し、have a knack for は「勘所を押さえている」——努力の跡が見えないのが違い。

04

without a second thought

  • That's not just a threat. I'll do it without a second thought.
  • He signed it without a second thought.

05

look down on ~

  • By criminal standards, I'd say that's cheap work. No wonder Yano looks down on you.
  • Don't look down on people who ask questions.

反対は look up to ~(尊敬する)。

06

at this juncture

  • This Dobu guy is bad news at this juncture.
  • At this juncture, we can't confirm anything.

07

too numerous to list

  • Anyway, his crimes are too numerous to list.
  • The errors were too numerous to list.

too ~ to … は否定の意味を含むので、can't を重ねないのが約束(× too numerous to can't list)。

08

put off ~ing

  • I'm gonna put off finding a job and all my schoolwork to do it.
  • Don't put off replying to that email.

うしろは必ず ~ing(× put off to find)。put ~ off の語順も可で、代名詞なら put it off と必ず間に入ります。

09

a diamond in the rough

  • I don't mean a diamond in the rough. A fantastic gemstone, yeah.
  • He's a diamond in the rough — give him a year.

10

think out loud

  • I wasn't asking you. I was just thinking out loud.
  • Sorry, I'm just thinking out loud here.

Just thinking out loud, but ~ と切り出せます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

If I were ~, I'd + 動詞の原形(もし〜だったら…

If I were a hairdresser, maybe I'd think.

If I were you, I'd ~(私ならこうする)は助言の定番。

PATTERN 2

I take it (that) + 主語 + 動詞(〜ということですね)

I take it you figured out who wants your dash cam data?

Did you ~?

PATTERN 3

the type who'd + 動詞の原形(〜しかねない人)

You're the type who'd waste his wishes if he found a magic lamp.

He is careless. the kind of person who ~ もほぼ同じ。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

hold water
