Episode Summary

Tanaka tells his own story. In the third grade, a classroom crackdown on inequality turned eraser collecting into a status war, and losing an online auction for a rare one — paid for with his father's credit card — became the defeat he never got over. Years later the same string of letters appears at the top of a gacha game's rankings, and five million yen deep, he decides the boy he used to be is owed something.

care for ~ / stand a chance / get away with ~ / beg ~ to …

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

care for ~

  • I don't care for modern games, honestly.
  • While doing my best to care for him, we bonded.

02

stand a chance

  • The other erasers I could afford on my allowance didn't stand a chance against Sato's collection.
  • We don't stand a chance against that team.

can't win が結果の断定なのに対し、not stand a chance は「土俵にすら立てない」——差が大きいのが含み。

03

get away with ~

  • I felt like I'd gotten away with it and was stoked.
  • He got away with it because nobody checked.

get away with murder

04

beg ~ to …

  • One time I begged my father to buy me a bird as a pet.
  • She begged him to reconsider.

beg for + 名詞(beg for help)とも使い分けます。

05

with the understanding that ~

  • He took me into the pet shop with the understanding that we'd just look around.
  • I agreed with the understanding that it's temporary.

06

by comparison

  • They bought my brother expensive computer games, so Maro must have been cheap by comparison.
  • The second version is tiny by comparison.

07

wear out

  • I read my bird encyclopedia again and again until the pages wore out.
  • These shoes wore out in a year.

人に使うと「疲れ果てる」(I'm worn out.)になります。

08

erase the history

  • I erased the history and any other trace that I'd used the computer.
  • He erased the history before handing back the laptop.

09

bump into ~

  • And when you bump into someone, you should apologize.
  • I bumped into an old classmate at the station.

10

make it to the top

  • If you're trying to make it to the top in a place like Tokyo, there are plenty of things to consider besides luck.
  • She made it to the top in five years.

be the best が状態なのに対し、make it to the top は「そこまで行く過程」。to のうしろは到達点で、make it to the meeting(会議に間に合う)のようにも使えます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

There was a brief period when ~(一時期〜だった)

When I was in the third grade, there was a brief period of time when collecting erasers was all the rage.

Once I collected erasers. a brief period / a time / a phase

PATTERN 2

It's no different than ~(〜と変わらない)

Having friends, money and time gives you an advantage. It's no different than reality.

no different と not different の違いも要点で、no のほうが「まったく」と強くなります。

PATTERN 3

as if / like it was nothing(何でもないことのように)

I dropped thousands of yen on a game like it was nothing.

like it was nothing (He lifted it like it was nothing.=軽々と持ち上げた)、あきれるときにも使えます——作中は後者。書き言葉では as if it were nothing に直します。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

get away with ~

with のうしろは名詞か ~ing(× get away with to do)。 You won't get away with this. get away with murder
