Episode Summary

Two doctors try to work out how Odokawa can tell anyone apart at a glance, and land on synesthesia — along with the fact that he seems to be talking to someone who isn't there. Elsewhere the billion-yen lottery ticket starts pulling everyone into the same orbit: Yano wants the dash cam data, Dobu wants the winner, and the winner is still posting about it online.

これは 上級レベル版。第8話は、「人を見分ける力」の正体、組み上がる強盗の筋書き、そして吊り上がるドラレコの値段が英語の見どころです。pick up on ~ / tell ~ apart / play along with ~ / let ~ sink in といった実際に作中で使われている表現に、synesthesia / phenomenon / indicator / solidarity / traitor のような語彙を合わせました。もう一方のレベルは〈中級〉版でどうぞ。

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈上級〉第8話の医師たちの推理とドブの計画から、読む・組む・仕掛ける言い回しを10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

pick up on ~

意味〜を感じ取る

  • At first I thought he had an exceptional sense of smell that allowed him to pick up on the distinctive hospital smell coming off of me.
  • She picked up on the tension right away.

💡 拾い上げる——誰も言っていないものに気づくという形です。notice が目に入ることなのに対し、pick up on ~ は「察する」——手がかりから読み取ったのが違い。におい・空気・言い回し・皮肉など、形のないものと相性がいい語です。on を落とすと「拾う・覚える」の意味に変わります。

02

tell ~ apart

意味〜を見分ける

  • It's possible that Odokawa has some kind of indicator for telling people apart.
  • I still can't tell the twins apart.

💡 離して置く——別のものとして区別するという形です。recognize が「これだと分かる」のに対し、tell ~ apart は「二つ以上を取り違えない」——比べる相手がいるのが前提。目的語は apart の前(tell them apart)。この tell は「言う」ではなく「見分ける」——can / can't と組むのがふつうです。

03

want for nothing

意味何不自由なく暮らす

  • He pretends that he wanted for nothing and experienced no difficulties.
  • She grew up wanting for nothing.

💡 この want は「不足している」——古い意味が残った言い方です。be rich が財産なのに対し、want for nothing は「足りないものがない」——豊かとは限らないのが違い。for を落とさないのがこの句の形。育ちを語るときによく使われ、作中は「そう装っている」という文脈です。

04

a figment of one's imagination

意味頭の中だけの存在

  • Maybe it's an imaginary friend. Like some sort of figment of his imagination.
  • The whole conversation was a figment of my imagination.

💡 figment は作り上げたもの——この形でしかほぼ使われません。a dream が眠って見るものなのに対し、a figment of one's imagination は「起きたまま作り出したもの」。実在しないと言い切るときの決まり文句で、It's just a figment of your imagination.(気のせいだよ)が典型。imagination は不可算です。

05

play along with ~

意味〜に調子を合わせる

  • For now, we'll just play along with his simple little plan.
  • Just play along with it for a few minutes.

💡 相手の曲に合わせて弾くという絵です。agree が同意なのに対し、play along は「本心は別」——合わせているだけなのが含み。with ~ で合わせる相手や話を言い、Just play along. だけでも「話を合わせて」と通じます。

06

let ~ sink in

意味〜をよく飲み込む

  • He knows the guy with the 1 billion. Let that sink in.
  • Give them a minute to let the news sink in.

💡 しみ込むまで待つという形です。understand が理解なのに対し、sink in は「腹に落ちる」——時間がかかるのが前提。Let that sink in. は言ったあとに間を置くための決まり文句で、プレゼンや議論で効きます。主語は情報のほう(It hasn't sunk in yet.=まだ実感がない)。

07

keep ~ informed

意味〜に逐一知らせる

  • I bribed a bank employee who's going to keep me informed up to the minute on all the details.
  • Keep me informed if anything changes.

💡 知っている状態に保つという形です。tell が一度伝えることなのに対し、keep ~ informed は「そのつど続けて」——継続が要点。keep + 人 + 形容詞の型で、on ~ を足せば話題を指定できます。仕事のメールでそのまま使える言い方です。

08

lay low

意味しばらく身を隠す

  • Get out of your place and lay low for a little while.
  • He laid low until the story died down.

💡 低くしている——目立たないようにするという形です。hide が隠れることなのに対し、lay low は「表に出ない」——ふだんの場所を離れるという含み。lie low が本来の形ですが、会話では lay low が定着しています(作中もこちら)。

09

mince words

意味言葉を選んで角を取る

  • He pretends he doesn't mince words.
  • She doesn't mince words about bad work.

💡 mince は細かく刻む——角が立たないように刻むという絵です。be polite が丁寧さなのに対し、mince words は「本題をぼかす」——ほとんど否定形で使うのが実際。not mince words で「歯に衣着せない」という褒め言葉になります。作中は「そのふりをしている」という皮肉。

10

fishing in troubled waters

意味どさくさに紛れて得をすること

  • When they do, I'll be there. It's what you call fishing in troubled waters.
  • Buying now is just fishing in troubled waters.

💡 濁った水のほうが魚は釣れる——混乱を利用するという古いことわざです。take advantage of ~ が一般的な言い方なのに対し、fishing in troubled waters は絵が具体的——混乱を起こしたのは自分ではないのが含み。waters は複数形(× troubled water)。相場や政局の話でよく見かけます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第8話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Not only is + 主語 + ~, but …(〜であるだけでなく…)

Not only is he a part time janitor, but he's drowning in debt.

Not only を文頭に出すと、うしろが疑問文の語順になる——倒置と呼ばれる形です。He is not only ~ but also … と書けば倒置は起きませんが、Not only を先頭に置くほうが強く響くのが使いどころ。is / does / did を主語の前に出すのが型で(Not only did he lie, but ~)、but のうしろは倒置しません。書き言葉とスピーチで映える——作中はラップの一節です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Seeing as how + 主語 + 動詞(〜なのだから)

Seeing as how I demanded 1 billion from Yamamoto, I know Yano will go after that guy for his 1 billion.

すでに分かっている事実を、判断の土台として置く形です。Because ~ が原因を指すのに対し、Seeing as how ~ は「そこから見れば当然」——推論の出発点を示します。Seeing as ~ / Seeing that ~ も同じ意味で、how を省くほうがやや硬い。くだけた会話寄りの表現なので、報告書には Given that ~ のほうが向きます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

If you don't mind me asking, ~(差し支えなければ)

If you don't mind me asking, when did the two of you meet each other?

踏み込んだ質問の前に置く、断りのひと言です。Can I ask ~? が許可を取るのに対し、If you don't mind me asking, ~ は「答えなくてもいい」——逃げ道を残すのが働き。me / my どちらも使われ(my asking のほうが文法的には正式)、会話では me が普通。年齢・給料・家族など、立ち入った話題の前置きにそのまま使えます。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

pick up on ~

⭐ 誰も口にしていないものに、なぜ気づけたのか——という場面の一語。拾い上げる——表に出ていない手がかりを取り上げるという形です。notice が「目に入る」のに対し、pick up on ~ は「察する」——相手が隠していても届くところが違います。におい・空気・言い回し・皮肉・ためらい——形のないものと相性がいいのが特徴で、pick up on a hint(ほのめかしに気づく)、pick up on the mood(空気を読む)のように使えます。否定形にすると「鈍い」という意味になり、He never picks up on hints. なら「彼はほのめかしが通じない」。on を落とすと別の句になり、pick up ~ は「拾う・迎えに行く・覚える」——この on ひとつで意味が変わるので、そこだけ気をつけてください。
