Episode Summary

Two doctors try to work out how Odokawa can tell anyone apart at a glance, and land on synesthesia — along with the fact that he seems to be talking to someone who isn't there. Elsewhere the billion-yen lottery ticket starts pulling everyone into the same orbit: Yano wants the dash cam data, Dobu wants the winner, and the winner is still posting about it online.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

make an impression on ~

  • I can't do it if they don't make an impression on me.
  • Her first line made an impression on everyone.

on ~ で相手を言い、make a good / bad impression と形容詞を挟めます。

02

cash in ~

  • When are you gonna cash in that lotto ticket?
  • He cashed in the vouchers before they expired.

03

go on sale

  • The new Mystery Kiss CD is going on sale on Christmas.
  • Tickets go on sale Friday at noon.

04

show off

  • Say that you actually didn't win, that you wanted to show off.
  • He's just showing off.

05

bring out the kid in ~

  • Losing your job has brought out the kid in you.
  • Snow brings out the kid in everyone.

make ~ happy が気分なのに対し、bring out the kid in ~ は「はしゃぐ側面が表に出た」——ふだんは隠れているのが前提。bring out the best in ~(いいところを引き出す)が同じ型の定番です。

06

pent-up anger

  • Do you have some pent up anger there or what?
  • Years of pent-up anger came out at once.

pent-up frustration / demand / energy

07

come flooding back

  • All these painful memories just came flooding back.
  • The smell made it all come flooding back.

08

for a fact

  • I know for a fact some gangsters are after your money.
  • I know for a fact that she's already left.

I know for a fact

09

eavesdrop

  • You totally eavesdropped.
  • I wasn't eavesdropping — you were shouting.

10

make it to the semi-finals

  • We made it to the semi finals.
  • They made it to the semi-finals two years running.

to のうしろは到達点で、the finals / the top eight と入れ替えられます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Would you care to + 動詞の原形?(〜なさいますか)

Ah, I'm headed to Yamabiko. Would you care to join us?

Do you want to ~? がまっすぐなのに対し、Would you care to ~? Care to join us?

PATTERN 2

How am I supposed to + 動詞の原形?(どうやって〜しろというんだ)

Is this your thing these days? Uh, how am I supposed to know?

I don't know. How am I supposed to know? know / do / fix / choose How was I supposed to know?(知りようがなかった)と過去形にすると言い訳の定番です。

PATTERN 3

I know for a fact (that) + 主語 + 動詞(〜なのは確かだ)

I know for a fact some gangsters are after your money.

I think ~ が意見、I'm sure ~ が確信なのに対し、I know for a fact ~ は「裏が取れている」——いちばん強い言い方になります。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

show off

He's just showing off. 物を挟むときは show ~ off(show off her ring / show it off)。 The dress shows off the color beautifully.
