Episode Summary
Four candidates become five, and each one stands up to say what kind of country she would build. Then a boy nobody invited announces that he is a knight — and the room, which has been polite about everything else, is not polite about that. A knight answers him properly, in words and then with a wooden sword. The beating is not the worst part of the day. The worst part comes afterward, quietly, when the person he did it all for explains that a list of debts is not the same thing as a reason to be loved.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
01
grace ~ with one's presence
- Thank you for gracing us with your presence.
- Thank you for gracing us with your presence this evening.
Thank you for coming.
02
could not be more tedious
- All of this long-winded and pointless blather could not be more tedious.
- The meeting could not be more tedious.
could not be better / happier
03
grovel before one's feet
- All you people need to do is just grovel before my feet and serve.
- He refused to grovel before anyone's feet.
grovel to ~ / grovel before ~ の形。
- He also made light of the chivalry.
- Don't make light of their concerns.
make light of one's own trouble
- However, I cannot stand idly by and acknowledge your claim.
- We can't stand idly by while this happens.
can't stand idly by
- Do you feel you have the resolve to match that?
- She has the resolve to see it through.
- You aren't worthy to stand at her side.
- He proved himself worthy to lead.
be good enough が水準の話なのに対し、be worthy to ~ は「値する」——格や品位を言うのが違い。be worthy of + 名詞(be worthy of praise)の形もあり、to のうしろは動詞、of のうしろは名詞と分けて覚えます。
- The propriety of those in your company will come into question.
- His judgment came into question after that.
- However, much to my dismay, you are missing me.
- Much to my dismay, the shop had closed.
much to one's + 感情の名詞という決まった型で、surprise / delight / relief も同じ形。
- Miss Felt speaks with conviction.
- She spoke with conviction and the room went quiet.

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Should I become the new ruler, I vow the dragon will forget.
(Should you have any questions, ~)。
- Should you need help, just call.(もし助けが要るときは、呼んでください)
- Should it rain, the event moves indoors.(万一雨なら、会場は屋内に移ります)
PATTERN 2
Have you + 過去分詞 + enough to ~?(〜するに足るだけ〜したのか)
Have you worked enough to earn the right to stand there as a champion?
Are you qualified? が資格の有無を尋ねるのに対し、Have you + 過去分詞 + enough to ~?
- Have you read enough to judge it?(判断できるだけ読んだのですか)
- Have you saved enough to buy one?(買えるだけ貯めたのですか)
PATTERN 3
Anyone inspiring such an expression on the face of one they wish to stand beside is not a knight.
- The man standing by the door is my uncle.(戸口に立っている男性が私の叔父です)
- Anyone wanting a copy should email us.(写しがご入り用の方はメールをください)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
stand idly by
- We can't stand idly by while this happens.
- However, I cannot stand idly by and acknowledge your claim.
- She wasn't going to stand idly by.
idly は「何もせずに」で、idle(何もしていない)の副詞。実際にはcan't stand idly by の否定形で使われることが多く、これから動くという宣言になります——I couldn't stand idly by, so I said something.
