Episode Summary
He comes back to the capital with nothing behind his eyes, and the people who find him can only guess at what happened. A healer checks every inch of him and gives up. A duchess asks a blue-haired maid a question she has never put into words, and gets an answer anyway. And somewhere behind all of it, a man who talks in circles about love examines a broken boy and delivers a verdict nobody wanted: that the madness is not real, because a truly broken person would not care who was watching.

10 expressions | 各解説つき
〈上級〉第15話のベテルギウスの長広舌、クルシュとレムの改まったやりとり、そして見送りの言葉から、相手の内心を言い当てる言い回しを10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。
意味〜を意に介さない
- If your insanity was genuine, you would pay no heed to the gazes of others.
- She paid no heed to the warnings.
💡 注意を、そちらへ向けないという形です。ignore ~ が無視するのに対し、pay no heed to ~ は文語的——そもそも気にとめていないのが違い。heed が名詞で「注意」。take heed of ~ なら「心にとめる」と逆向きになります。
意味人を貶める侮辱
- It is a demeaning insult, a true madness.
- The remark was a demeaning insult to everyone there.
💡 相手の格を、下へ引きずり下ろす侮辱という形です。a rude remark が失礼な発言なのに対し、a demeaning insult は「品位を奪う」——人としての扱いを下げるのが違い。demean が「品位を落とす」。demean oneself なら「自分を落とす」という自分向けの使い方です。
意味〜への同情を引こうとする
- To behave so cleverly and quietly as if seeking sympathy for your situation.
- He wasn't seeking sympathy for himself.
💡 同情を、探しに行くという形です。ask for help が助けを求めるのに対し、seek sympathy は気持ちのほう——あわれんでほしいのが違い。批判の文脈で使われることが多く、「同情を買おうとしている」ととがめる響きになります。
意味正気すぎる
- Your so-called insanity is far too sane.
- His answer was far too sane for someone in a panic.
💡 行きすぎているほど、筋が通っているという形です。be reasonable がほめ言葉なのに対し、be far too sane はここでは疑い——ちぐはぐだと突くのが違い。far too ~ で「〜すぎる」を強めています。so-called(いわゆる)と組ませると、相手の言い分を疑っていると示せます。
05
despite one's shortcomings
意味至らぬところがあっても
- Yet despite those shortcomings, you are so loved!
- Despite his shortcomings, the team followed him.
💡 足りないところを、脇に置いたうえでという形です。even though ~ が文をつなぐのに対し、despite ~ のうしろは名詞——短くまとまるのが違い。shortcomings はいつも複数形で「欠点・至らなさ」。faults より角が立たないので、人を評するときに使いやすい語です。
06
choose one's words carefully
意味言葉を選ぶ
- And be sure to choose your words carefully.
- He chose his words carefully before answering.
💡 口にする語を、選り分けるという形です。Be polite. が態度を求めるのに対し、choose one's words carefully は中身——言い方ひとつで結果が変わる場面なのが違い。忠告としても、脅しとしても使えて、この場面は後者です。
07
hesitate to conclude ~
意味〜と決めつけるのをためらう
- But I hesitate to conclude that your behavior and the glances you cast are those a woman gives a man.
- I hesitate to conclude that the data proves it.
💡 結論に踏みこむのを、ためらうという形です。I'm not sure. が自信のなさなのに対し、hesitate to conclude ~ は慎重さ——踏みこめば失礼になると分かっているのが違い。論文や報告書でよく使う型で、断定を避けたいときにそのまま置けます。
08
let one's personal feelings interfere
意味私情をはさむ
- I know I mustn't let my personal feelings interfere.
- A judge can't let personal feelings interfere.
💡 私的な気持ちが、割りこむのを許すという形です。be emotional が状態なのに対し、let ~ interfere は「入りこませる」——止められたはずという含みが違い。否定で使うのがふつうで、職務や判断の話によく出ます。
意味絶句する
- I was stunned speechless for a moment.
- We were stunned speechless by the news.
💡 打たれて、口がきけなくなるという形です。be surprised が驚きなのに対し、be stunned speechless は「言葉が出ない」——反応そのものが止まるのが違い。stun が「気絶させるほど驚かす」。良い知らせにも悪い知らせにも使えます。
10
judge ~ as one sees fit
意味〜を然るべく裁く
- I shall simply judge you as our lord sees fit.
- The committee will judge each case as it sees fit.
💡 その人が適当と見るとおりに、裁くという形です。decide が決めるのに対し、as one sees fit は「裁量に任せる」——基準を明かさないのが違い。see fit が「よしとする」。Do as you see fit. なら「お好きなように」と相手に委ねる形です。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
第15話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
PATTERN 1
What of ~?(〜はどうなのだ)
What of his friend?
連れの者はどうした。
話に出ていない一点を、引き戻して尋ねる形です。What about ~? が口語なのに対し、What of ~? は文語・古風——重々しく響くのが違い。about が of に替わっただけですが、日常会話ではまず使いません——物語・演説・古い文章の言い方です。What of it? なら「それがどうした」という開き直りになります。
他にも使える例:
- What of the others who were with him?(連れの者たちはどうなったのだ)
- What of the promise you made?(そなたが交わした約束はどうなる)
PATTERN 2
would rather ~ than …(…するくらいなら〜するほうがましだ)
You mean that you'd rather waste away in stagnation than repay the goodwill shown to you?
受けた好意に報いるくらいなら、よどんだまま朽ちるほうがよいと申すか。
二つを並べて、こちらを選ぶと言う形です。prefer A to B が好みなのに対し、would rather ~ than … はその場の選択——どちらも気は進まないことが多いのが違い。rather と than のうしろは、どちらも動詞の原形——to は付けません。I'd rather not. だけでやんわり断る言い方にもなります。
他にも使える例:
- I'd rather walk than wait for the bus.(バスを待つくらいなら歩きます)
- She'd rather stay quiet than lie.(うそをつくくらいなら黙っていたい)
PATTERN 3
such a + 名詞 + as yourself(〜ともあろう方が)
Why does such a believer in love as yourself adhere to someone like him?
愛の信奉者ともあろうそなたが、なぜあのような者に執着する。
その肩書にふさわしくない、と匂わせる形です。a person like you がふつうの言い方なのに対し、such a ~ as yourself は改まった型——持ち上げながら刺すのが違い。as のうしろは yourself / himself のように再帰代名詞を置きます。皮肉にもお世辞にもなるので、言い方で向きが決まります。
他にも使える例:
- A man such as yourself should know better.(あなたほどの方が、分からぬはずもない)
- Such a scholar as himself would not guess.(彼ほどの学者が当て推量をするはずがない)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
pay no heed to ~
「〜を意に介さない」
- She paid no heed to the warnings.
- If your insanity was genuine, you would pay no heed to the gazes of others.
- He paid no heed to what people said about him.
⭐ 「その狂気は本物ではない」と断じる、ベテルギウスの決め手。注意を、そちらへ払わない——という形です。ignore ~ が「わざと無視する」のに対し、pay no heed to ~ は「そもそも気にとめていない」——無視する努力すらしていないところが違います。だから、この場面の決め手になる——本当に壊れているなら、人の目など目に入らないはずだという理屈が、この一語で立つからです。heed が名詞で「注意・留意」。pay attention to ~ と同じ組み立てですが、heed のほうがずっと文語的で、忠告や警告を目的語に取ることが多い語です——They paid no heed to the storm warning.紛らわしいのがtake heed of ~。こちらは「心にとめる」で向きが逆——気にとめないのが pay no heed to ~、気にとめるのが take heed of ~ と分けると混ざりません。
