Something enormous comes out of the fog, and the person who buys him a way out of it is gone by morning — gone so completely that nobody else remembers she existed. He arrives at the mansion he was racing toward and finds it exactly as he left it, which is somehow worse. A maid gives him an assessment he does not want. PATTERN 1

そんなふうに反射的に飛びつかないでほしいわ
I'd prefer you not ~ は仮定法現在を使った丁寧で冷ややかなお願いの型です。
