Episode Summary

Something enormous comes out of the fog, and the person who buys him a way out of it is gone by morning — gone so completely that nobody else remembers she existed. He arrives at the mansion he was racing toward and finds it exactly as he left it, which is somehow worse. A maid gives him an assessment he does not want. A librarian refuses him a favour he should not have asked for. And the thing waiting at the end of the hallway has been waiting, it says, ever so patiently.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

If it wasn't for ~(〜がいなかったら)

If it wasn't for Rem--

If it wasn't for ~ は文の形——あとに主節を続けやすいのが違い。 If it weren't for ~——仮定法なので were が本来の形ですが、会話では wasn't もふつうに使われます。

PATTERN 2

anywhere but ~(〜以外ならどこでも)

It doesn't matter where. Anywhere but here.

anyone but ~ / anything but ~ も同じ作りで、anything but ~ は「決して〜ではない」という強い否定にもなります。

PATTERN 3

Even for ~, …(〜にしても)

Even for a nightmare, this doesn't make any sense at all.

Even for him, that was rude.

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

come up with something

come up with an idea / a plan / a name と案の名前を置くのが基本形ですが、お金にも使えます——We need to come up with the deposit by Friday.(金曜までに敷金を工面しないと)紛らわしいのがcome across ~。
