PATTERN 1
On what grounds do you ~?（何を根拠に〜するのか？）
On what grounds do you know when and where the White Whale will next appear?
何を根拠に、白鯨が次にいつどこに現れるとわかるのだ？
On what grounds ~? は「どんな根拠で〜？」。改まった問いただしの型です。
他にも使える例：

PATTERN 2
If ~ doesn't have any appeal for you, then forget I mentioned it（〜に魅力がなければ、聞かなかったことに）

have appeal for ~ は「〜にとって魅力がある」。forget I mentioned it で引き際を示す交渉の型です。

~ and … are two different things（〜と…は別物だ）
