Episode Summary
The whale is finally in front of them, and the plan works — for about a minute. The magic scatters, the beast does not fall, and the fog starts taking people out of the world entirely: not killing them, erasing them, names and memories and all. Meanwhile an old swordsman keeps swinging at a monster he has been waiting forty years to meet, and the story keeps cutting back to a girl in a field of flowers who asked him, long ago, why he carried a sword at all.

10 expressions |
- I find it hard to believe this mabeast got the better of my wife, a Master Swordsman.
- His temper got the better of him.
主語が感情でもよく使います——Curiosity got the better of me.(好奇心に負けた)the better は「優位」で、形はいつもこのままです。
- People hit by the White Whale's fog vanish from existence.
- Whole villages seemed to vanish from existence.
- A total of 21 lost.
- A total of 340 people applied.
うしろは数字で、動詞は数字に合わせます——A total of 12 were rejected.
- It appears that one whole platoon was wiped out.
- Half the stock was wiped out in a day.
- It won't even be possible to adequately protect the honor of those who fell in battle.
- His grandfather fell in battle at twenty-three.
- I don't care about the role that was bestowed upon you.
- The title was bestowed upon her in 1998.
- It puts you one step closer to your dream, right?
- That brings us one step closer to a decision.
bring / take / get / put
- So have you grown to like flowers?
- I've grown to like the quiet here.
grow to + 動詞の原形でlove / hate / respect / accept ともつながります——I grew to respect him.
- It's putting up less of a fight than it should.
- They put up more of a fight than we expected.
resist が抵抗するという動作なのに対し、put up ~ of a fight は抵抗の度合い——more / less / a good を挟んで測るのが違い。put up a good fight
- I'm gonna take your sword away from you.
- No one can take that away from her.
remove ~ が取り除くのに対し、take ~ away from … 抽象的なものにも使えます——They can't take your experience away from you.(経験だけは奪われない)

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Simply because ~(ただ〜というだけのことだ)
Simply because this is all I have.
- Simply because it was the right thing to do.(ただ、それが正しかったからです)
- I said no simply because I was tired.(断ったのは、ただ疲れていたからです)
PATTERN 2
There's no reason 主語 should ~(〜する理由はない)
With a face like yours, there's no reason you should be holding a sword.
You don't have to ~ が義務の否定なのに対し、There's no reason you should ~ は理由そのものを否定——相手の前提を崩すのが違い。 should を落として to 不定詞にしても同じ意味です——There's no reason to worry.
- There's no reason you should apologize.(あなたが謝る理由はありません)
- There's no reason this should take so long.(これにこんなに時間がかかるはずがない)
PATTERN 3
Don't ever +
Don't ever look down on that beauty.
- Don't ever say that again.(二度とそれを言うな)
- Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.(誰にもそれを否定させるな)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
get the better of ~
- I find it hard to believe this mabeast got the better of my wife.
- Curiosity got the better of me.
- Don't let your nerves get the better of you.
紛らわしいのがget the best of ~。
