Episode Summary

The second season opens on a carriage ride and a confession that lands nowhere: the boy finally says the girl's name out loud, and nobody remembers who she is. While he talks, an archbishop who eats names walks into the duchess's camp. By the time he gets back, a friend is breathing but gone, a leader has lost her own past, and the alliance everyone fought for is being argued away in a lounge.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

have no ground to stand on

  • You have no ground to stand on when you ridicule someone simply for being correct.
  • If you skipped every meeting, you have no ground to stand on.

You're wrong.

02

be beneath ~

  • All that hunger and thirst nonsense, such petty self-indulgences are beneath me.
  • That kind of gossip is beneath you.

I don't like it. 人をたしなめるときの That's beneath you.

03

loathe the thought of -ing

  • I absolutely loathe the thought of going on with my life, knowing nothing.
  • I loathe the thought of starting over.

don't want to ~ が意向なのに対し、loathe the thought of -ing は生理的な拒絶——実行前の想像の段階で拒んでいるのが違い。 can't bear the thought of -ing

04

exact one's revenge

  • We may be given a chance to exact our revenge.
  • He waited ten years to exact his revenge.

05

solemnly swear that ~

  • Can you solemnly swear that Miss Crusch won't be hurt again if we do that?
  • I can't solemnly swear that it will work.

就任宣誓や法廷の I do solemnly swear …

06

be on the same page

  • Though we can't exactly say we're all on the same page now, either.
  • Let's make sure we're on the same page before we start.

合意していなくても使えます——We're on the same page about the risk.(危険の見立ては揃っている)会議の冒頭でいちばん使う一言です。

07

be fixated on -ing

  • They're fixated on getting rid of Emilia, the one they see as the troublemaker.
  • He's fixated on winning that one account.

08

be indebted to ~

  • And, you know, I'm even indebted to Otto.
  • We're indebted to the neighbors for that week.

09

carry oneself with dignity

  • You always carry yourself with such dignity.
  • She carried herself with dignity through all of it.

10

to this very day

  • It's actually something I still regret, even to this very day.
  • The rule is still in force to this very day.

even to this very day と even を足すと、意外さまで乗ります。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

How dare you do such a brutal thing to those brave and loyal soldiers?

That was cruel. How dare you!

PATTERN 2

Has it yet occurred to you that ~?(〜と考えてみたことはありますか)

Has it yet occurred to you, with regard to this Gluttony, we may be given a chance to exact our revenge?

Did you think about ~? Has it occurred to you that ~?

PATTERN 3

Knowing what we know now, ~(今わかっていることを踏まえれば)

Knowing what we know right now, can you solemnly swear that Miss Crusch won't be hurt again?

Now that we know ~ が理由なのに対し、Knowing what we know now, ~ は前置き——結論ではなく条件を示しているのが違い。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

have no ground to stand on

You're wrong. 紛らわしいのがhave no leg to stand on。
