Episode Summary

The second season opens on a carriage ride and a confession that lands nowhere: the boy finally says the girl's name out loud, and nobody remembers who she is. While he talks, an archbishop who eats names walks into the duchess's camp. By the time he gets back, a friend is breathing but gone, a leader has lost her own past, and the alliance everyone fought for is being argued away in a lounge.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

through thick and thin

  • You made a promise not to leave Mili alone, and you stuck to your word through thick and thin.
  • They've backed us through thick and thin.

02

hear me out

  • This is gonna be pretty hard for me to say, but please hear me out.
  • Just hear me out before you say no.

listen to me が聞いてなのに対し、hear me out は最後まで聞いて——out に「最後まで」が入っているのが違い。反論されそうなときの前置きで、Just hear me out.

03

laugh it off

  • When they say outrageous things, you've gotta smile and laugh it off, you know?
  • He just laughed it off and changed the subject.

it の位置は laugh と off のあいだで、laugh off it とは言いません。

04

What brought that on?

  • My goodness. What brought that on?
  • Whoa. What brought that on?

Why did you say that? が理由を問うのに対し、What brought that on?

05

come right out and say it

  • Time for me to man up! Come right out, and say it!
  • Just come right out and say it.

say it clearly が明瞭に言うのに対し、come right out and say it は踏み切って言う——言いにくさを越える動きが入っているのが違い。

06

check in on ~

  • So what's the matter with me taking the time to check in on her?
  • Could you check in on my mother while I'm away?

07

To put it simply, ~

  • To put it simply, the Authority of Gluttony is a power for eating.
  • To put it simply, we're out of time.

In other words, ~ が言い換えなのに対し、To put it simply, ~ は噛み砕き——相手に合わせて下げているのが違い。put は「言葉にする」の意味で、to put it another way(別の言い方をすると)、to put it bluntly(ありていに言えば) と展開できます。

08

There's no need to rush.

  • Oh, absolutely! There's no need to rush.
  • There's no need to rush — take the week.

Take your time. There's no need to rush. need は名詞で、no need to + 動詞の原形 の形。No need to rush.

09

I hate to ask a favor of you, but ~

  • I hate to ask a favor of you when you've already got so much on your mind.
  • I hate to ask a favor of you, but could you cover Friday?

Can you ~? I hate to ask a favor of you, but ~ は緩衝材——相手の負担を認めてから入るのが違い。ask a favor of 人で「人に頼み事をする」。do 人 a favor(頼みを聞く) と向きが逆なので、of と do の取り違えに注意。

10

the same goes for ~

  • I hate to admit it, but the same goes for Julius and his crew.
  • The same goes for the second half.

The same goes for you.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Is it wrong to want to + 動詞の原形 ~?(〜したいと思うのは、いけないことですか)

Is it wrong to want to help simply because I don't remember her?

I want to help. Is it wrong to want to ~?

PATTERN 2

Once things calm down, there are actually a lot of people I need to thank.

うしろは現在形で書きます(Once it stops であって Once it will stop ではない)。

PATTERN 3

Every morning, you would always wake up just before me.

(I used to live there. は言えてもI would live there.

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

through thick and thin

人との関係にいちばんよく使います——She stayed with the team through thick and thin.(彼女はどんなときもチームに残った)語順は固定で、thin and thick とは言いません。紛らわしいのがno matter what。

見出しはthrough thick and thin / hear me out / laugh it off / What brought that on? / come right out and say it

come right out and say it / check in on ~ / the same goes for ~ まで扱う、リゼロ第26話「それぞれの誓い」の中級版です。
